Abstract

1522773 Cold cathode tubes R O HUNTER 25 Jan 1977 [4 Feb 1976] 02978/77 Heading H1D A high speed, high current, high voltage switch comprises two electrodes 16, 17 in a gas at pressure at least 0À1 atm., preferably near 1 atm., the electrode gap making secondary ionization negligible at working voltage: ionization is initiated and determined by an electron beam entering the gas chamber 13 via a window 30. The gas may be a rare gas plus a trace of molecular gas, e.g. A+ 1-5% CO 2 , or it may be CH 4 or BF 3 , to provide the required speed of switch-on and switch-off: the gas may preferably be supplied continuously and pumped off for external cooling. The high voltage electrode 16 faces grounded mesh electrode 17 covering supported 31 thin Ti window 30 (Fig. 7, not shown) dividing the gas chamber 13 from vacuum chamber 26 in which window 30 functions as grounded anode facing cold cathode 27. Pulsing cathode 27 negatively via a Marx circuit (Fig. 1, not shown) injects electrons through window 30, ionizing the gas and allowing current, e.g. 20 kA, to flow within 200 ns. (Figs. 3, 4, 5, not shown). Switch-off may be by suppressing the electron beam by shorting its supply via a gas tube. The supply may be continuous rather than via Marx capacitors, with a conventional slow switch to shunt electrodes 16, 17. To protect window 30 at switch-off when it acts as a cathode on the gas chamber, insulated guard grid 64 may be grounded via gas tube 68, triggered by the same circuit which triggers the supply-shorting gas tube. When switching A.C. a similar guard grid may be fitted to electrode 16.
