Abstract

1523281 Remote control; telephone answering system ANSAFONE Ltd 28 July 1975 [26 July 1974] 33228/74 Heading G4H In a remote control system, a transmitter, Fig. 1, sends a coded «access» signal comprising at least two groups of different frequencies to a receiver, Fig. 2, associated with apparatus to be controlled, whereby to enable it to receive subsequently transmitted control signals without the need for further access signals. As described, the apparatus to be remotely controlled is a telephone answering machine. A telephone connection is first set up, and the access signal, comprising three groups of three frequencies fa, fb1, fc is then sent. An acknowledgement tone is returned, then a control signal (play, erase, record, &c.), comprising a group of three frequencies fa, fb, fc, is sent, and a second acknowledgement tone is returned. Transmitter (Fig. 1).-The access signal is generated by depressing switch A. This causes a delay D.C. to switch off a transistor TR1 (so that an oscillator Tx can generate frequencies fa, fb1 and fc); switch off a transistor TR2 to enable a ring counter RC; and start a clock CPG. Outputs 3, 5, 7 of the eight outputs of RC are sequentially connected to a «plug» P1 wired to give the address of the desired receiver. Three of the eight outputs of P1 actuate a decimal/binary converter DB which produces three sequential outputs (abc), causing Tx to generate three sequential groups of three frequencies fa, fb1, fc. These frequencies are fed via filters F1, F2 to an acoustic transducer TD which is held close to the mouthpiece. A command is subsequently selected by means of a switch 1-7. A corresponding output (abc) causes Tx to generate a group of frequencies fa, fb, fc. Since TR1 is on now, fb rather than fb1 is produced, thus enabling the receiver to discriminate between access and control signals. Receiver (Fig.2).-The incoming frequencies are received at RX whose 3-bit output is fed to a binary/decimal converter BD. When an access signal is received, a «plug» P2 (corresponding to P1 in the transmitter) produces outputs a, b, c (one for each group of frequencies) which are fed to gates G, latches L and monostables M so connected that if each group is received within a predetermined time after the preceding one, then a gate G10 is enabled. The output of this gate is fed to a transistor VT1 to turn it on so that fb rather than fb1 will be recognized, and via an integrator C10, R34 to enable gates G1-G7 through one of which the control signal will eventually pass.
