Abstract

1528035 Bearings CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 24 Oct 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 43847/75 Heading F2A [Also in Division B3] A part including a bore having a bearing integrally solidified and bonded to the bore is made by (1) hot machining a bore into a billet; (2) introducing molten bearing material, e.g. bronze, about a mandrel positioned in the bore, steps (1) and (2) being carried out in a non- oxidizing atmosphere; (3) withdrawing the mandrel from the bore while cooling the end of the mandrel which exits the bore last sufficiently to progressively solidify the bearing material adjacent the cooled end. A part of the mandrel intermediate the cooled end and the other end may be heated, and (2) the billet is preferably maintained above the melting point of the bearing material (e.g. 650-1500‹ C.) during steps (1) and (2). In one embodiment, Fig. 3, molten bearing material is poured from 60 into a space defined by bore 18 of track roller 10 and shaft 45, which forms part of mandrel 40. The mandrel is provided with cooling coils 56 and induction heating means 58. Ring member 43, with overflow trough 44, and base member 42 are placed adjacent upper and lower end surfaces 20 of track roller 10. As the mandrel is withdrawn upwards, bearing material adjacent heating section 51 of the mandrel is kept molten until it is solidified by subsequent passage of the tapered cooling section 50. Excess molten bearing material is pushed out into overflow 44.
