Abstract
1528288 Flame retardant polyurethane foams DOW CORNING CORP 29 April 1976 [18 Sept 1975 1 March 1976] 17468/76 Heading C3R A flame retardant rigid polyurethane syntactic foam is obtained by curing a mixture comprising a polyol; a polyisocyanate; microballoons; a catalyst and a flame retardant having a viscosity of less than 100 centipoises at 24‹ C. and a volatility such that it is not evaporated by the heat of reaction generated when the ingredients react, the flame retardant also acting as a flow promoter for the mixture, there being present in the mixture a sufficient amount of microballoons to provide a non-castable mixture in the absence of the flame retardant and a sufficient amount of flame retardant to provide a fluid, castable mixture. Suitable polyols and polyisocyanates are those which are liquid at 25‹C. In a typical example a polyol; polymethylene polyphenyl diisocyanate; a flame retardant, tris- (beta-chloroethyl)-phosphate; glass micro-balloons and a catalyst comprising triethylene diamine in dipropylene glycol were mixed adding the isocyanate last. The resulting fluid mixture was cast into a mould and cured to give a rigid flame retardant foam. Glass fibres, less than 25 mm. in length, may be added to the mixture to improve the flexural strength of the foam.
