Abstract

1529147 Gas burner CUTLER-HAMMER WORLD TRADE Inc 24 Aug 1977 [4 Oct 1976] 35546/77 Heading F4T A gas burner assembly comprises means 18 for supplying air and gas to a burning zone, a flash or exhaust passage 24 having an inlet at the burning zone, means 8 for varying the air/gas ratio in the flash passage so as to control the flame propogation speed and an ignition source 42 spaced from the burning zone for igniting the mixture in the flash passage when the flame propogation speed is greater than the flow velocity. Primary air is supplied to a line 4, and secondary air to a line 6, by a pump 2, and gas is supplied to the line 4 through a connection 14, the air/gas ratio being controlled by valves 8, 48. The primary air/gas mixture enters a sealed cavity 16a and travels up tube 18 to the burning zone. Secondary air enters a sealed cavity 16b and travels through a tube 20 to the combustion zone. The exhaust travels down a tube 24 to be discharged to the atmosphere via a hood 28. When the assembly is used as a calorimeter, heat-absorbing air is delivered through a tube 32, from a sealed cavity 30a, and is guided upwardly through perforated baffles 34, 36, where the heat from the flame is absorbed by the air and the temperature recorded by a thermometer at the top of tube 32, the heated air then being discharged to atmosphere through tubes 38, 40. When there is no combustion the air/gas mixture flows downwardly through tube 24, is ignited at 42, and the flame flashes back up the tube to ignite the burner.
