PATENT SPECIFICATION
( 21) Application No 30589/77 ( 22) Filed 21 July 1977 -4 ( 31) Convention Application No 2633 498 CO ( 32) Filed 26 July 1976 in w% ( 33) Fed Rep of Germany (DE) M ( 44) Complete Specification published 4 June 1980 ( 51) TNT CL ‘ B 4 IJ 19/96 ( 52) Index at acceptance B 6 F KM ( 11) I 19) ( 54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO LINE ADVANCE MECHANISMS FOR PRINTING MACHINES ( 71) We, SIEMENS AKTIENGESELLSCHAFT, a German Company, of Berlin and Munich, Federal Republic of Germany, do hereby declare the invention, for which we pray that a patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and
by the following statement: –
The present invention relates to line advance mechanisms for printing machines.
When printing on forms it is necessary to ensure that, after inserting a new stack of forms the printed characters lie either in the middle of a transverse column or on a line Mechanical line driving systems engage at intervals of half a line Positioning errors outside this range are corrected by changing the relative position of drive arrangement and spiked wheel of the roller.
An object of the invention is to improve upon the known line advance mechanisms.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a line advance mechanism for printing machine, the mechanism comprising: a rotatable platen; a d c motor arranged to rotate the platen; and control means arranged to cause the d c motor to advance or retreat the platen, in dependence upon signals received at a control input of the control means, by an angular amount which is equal to a part of the rotary angle corresponding to single line spacing, the control means including a timing circuit to time the duration of current flow in said motor according to said angular amount.
Preferably, said control means includes switching means arranged to be activated by a first key for advance and by a second key for retreat of the platen.
According to a further aspect of the invention, there is provided a printing machine incorporating a line advance mechanism according to said one aspect.
For a better understanding of the invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, the single Figure of which schematically illustrates a line advance mechanism according to the invention.
The Figure shows a d c motor 1 -driving a spiked roller 3 via a gear system 2 The form paper 4 is placed around the spiked roller which engages by means of its spikes with corresponding perforations in the paper 4 The motor 1 is controlled by an electronic control system 9 including a motor current timing circuit The size of the line spacing ( 1, 1 + or 2 lines) is selected by system 9 in accordance with the setting of a switch 6 Current is accordingly supplied to motor 1 for a time metered by the timing circuit The keys 7 and 8 form part of a special keyboard section In dependence upon which of these keys is pressed, the motor is caused to execute a small rotation or step anti-clockwise or clockwise by a part of the rotary angle corresponding to single line spacing The gear system 2 is such that rotation by six steps of the motor corresponds to single-line spacing of 4-25 mm Each step is of course achieved by suitable control of motor current by the timing circuit.
When the control system 9 of the stepping motor receives the command «new line» from a keyboard (lines Z) or a receiver (lines S) in the case of a telex machine, the motor 1 executes the corresponding amount of rotation and advances the paper 4 by an appropriate amount with the aid of the spiked wheels of the roller 3 This amount matches the inter-line spacing in the form.
When a new stack of forms is inserted, it should be ensured that the printed characters lie in the middle of the transverse column or on the line The motor now offers the possibility of setting the relative position of roller and normal line advance function by individual rotation steps until the position at which printing will occur coincides correctly with the form The first transverse column on the stack of forms is thus aligned after insertion of paper 4 by using the key for advancing by single steps by the motor If the middle of the column 1568611 1,568,611 is passed, the form can be retreated to the middle of the column by the motor executing single steps in reverse When the spiked roller has reached this position, this forms the basis for the subsequent pre-selected line steps for 1, 1 U or 2 line spacing This adjustment is made using keys 7 and 8 in the special section of the keyboard One key advances (e g 7) the motor one step at a time until the paper has reached the right position With the present embodiment example the maximum printing error is mm The error is correspondingly larger or smaller using other ratios in gear system 2 The other key (e g 8) moves the paper backwards by small angular steps.
The subsequent line steps are carried out from the position of rest of the motor.
Thus the mechanism has the advantage that the position of the column in a form can be corrected from the keyboard The manual knob for turning the roller 3 is now only needed as an initial aid to insertion.
It can even remain in the casing when forms are being printed In addition the danger of the relationship between printing and line drive changing when operating at high printing speeds is considerably smaller than with a conventional spiked roller.

WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1 A line advance mechanism for a printing machine, the mechanism comprising: a rotatable platen; a d c motor arranged to rotate the platen; and control means arranged to cause the d c motor to advance or retreat the platen, in dependence upon signals received at a control input of the control means, by an angular amount which is equal to a part of the rotary angle corresponding to single line spacing, the control means including a timing circuit to time the duration of current flow in said motor according to said angular amount.
2 A mechanism according to Claim 1 wherein said control means includes switching means arranged to be activated by a first key for advance and by a second key for retreat of the platen.
3 A line advance mechanism substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the single Figure of the accompanying drawing.
4 A printing machine incorporating a line advance mechanism according to any one of the preceding claims.
A printing machine constructed in accordance with Claim 4, wherein the printing machine is a telex machine.
