Description
(54) EASEL
(71) I, PETER WALTER PURCHASE, of «Terra-Loon», Dyers Lane, Bathpool,
Taunton, Somerset, a British Subject, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: This invention relates to easels, and although it is particularly applicable to artists easels it can also be applied to easels for blackboards, signs and the like (herein referred to generally as boards).
According to the present invention there is provided an easel and board, the easel having a rear leg and two front legs pivotally connected at their upper end portions to the rear leg on either side thereof, the pivotal connection being adapted to allow the legs to assume a closed condition in which they lies alongside each other and an open condition in which their lower ends are spread apart for standing on the ground, the upper portion of the rear leg extending beyond the pivotal connection with the front legs for upper pivotal connection with the rear face of the board, a lower portion of the board below said upper connection being connected with the front legs, at least one of the connections between board and legs being releasable to allow the easel to be closed, a link member for establishing one of said connections between board and easel by being hingedly connectable at one end to the rear face of the board and at the other end to the easel, and elastically extensible means acting under tension between the front and rear legs so as in use to maintain the easel in a desired attitude. Preferabbly the connection of the board with the front legs is detachable.
Preferably the upper extended portion of the leg carries a cross-member which is pivotally connected to the board at horizontally spaced apart locations. Preferably, the lower connection of the board with the front legs is by means of a cross member mounted to the rear of the board and which is detachably and hingedly connectable at its end portions to the front legs.Preferably, alternative lower cross members are provided for connection to the front legs, the two cross members forming part of a framework constituting said link member in which they are held in parallel spaced apart relationship, one of the cross members being hingedly connected to a lower portion of the rear of the board so that the other cross member can be swung from a retracted condition in which it lies adjacent the rear surface of the board and an extended condition in which it projects rearwardly from the board and is connected to the front legs. Means may be provided for releasably securing the framework in the retracted condition. The elastically extensible means may comprise an elongate elastically extensible member having hook elements at its ends for connection to opposite end portions of the cross member which project laterally beyond the front legs. The pivotal connection between the legs is preferably by means of a hinge pin which carries the front legs at its opposite projecting end portions, the hinge pin being curved or angled so that the axes of its end portions are not co-linear, whereby pivotal movement of the legs allows the front legs to move between open and closed conditions relative to the rear leg.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, one embodiment will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the rear of the board and easel in one configuration,
Fig. 2 shows a perspective view of the rear of the board and easel in another configuration,
Fig. 3 shows a detailed perspective view of part of the easel framework in the configuration of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 shows a front view of part of the easel framework in the collapsed condition, and
Fig. 5 shows a cross-sectional view on the line V-V of Fig. 4.
Referring to the drawings, and firstly to
Fig. 1 a rectangular board 10 is supported on a tripod easel which has a rear leg 12 and two front legs 14. The upper end portions of the front legs 14 are pivotally connected at 16 to the rear leg 12 on either side thereof. The upper end portion 18 of the rear leg 12 is extended beyond the pivot point 16, and is telescopically interfitted with an extension piece 20 which carries a horizontal cross member 22, opposite end portions of which are hingedly connected at 24 to the rear face of the board 10 near its top edge. To the rear face of the board 10 below the cross member 22 is mounted a framework of generally H-shape, comprising a first horizontal cross member 26, a second horizontal cross member 28 parallel thereto, and a central connecting beam 30.
The cross member 26 is pivotally connected at its end portions 32 to the rear of the board 10 near its bottom edge, and the beam 30 is releasably held at 34 to the board 10, so that the whole H frame lies against the rear face of the board. The cross member 26 is also pivotally and detachably connected at 38, just inwardly of the connections 32, to fixed locations on the front legs 14. An elastically extensible rubber strap 40 extends freely through a ring 42 which is secured to a fixed location on the rear leg 12. The ends of the strap 40 carry hook elements 44 which, when the strap is under tension, can be releasably hooked over the ends of the cross member 26 projecting beyond the pivot points 32.It will be seen that the tension in the strap 40 tending to close the rear leg 12 below the pivot point 16 towards the front legs 14 keeps the upper extension 18 of the rear leg in firm connection with the extension piece 20, thus avoiding the need for any screw or other locking device to maintain the telescopic connection.
All the frame members are conveniently of circular section metal tubing of uniform diameter, for example i» bore chromeplated steel tubing. The pivotal connections can be effected by means of resilient bifurcate clips which are commonly available for mounting pipes. Suitable clips of this kind are made of nylon, and have a passage through their base portion between the arms of the clip to take a screw by means of which the clip is secured to a suitable support. The tubing can be pressed into the opening between the arms, and once in it is securely retained, although it can if necessary be forcibly removed against the resilience of the arms. By using circular section tube, the tube can be rotated within the clip, thereby providing the pivotal connection. Preferably all the connections 24, 32, 34 and 38 are provided in this way.
To dismantle the board and easel, the ends of the strap 40 are unhooked, the lower edge of the board 10 is released from the clips 38 on the front legs 14, and the extension piece 20 is withdrawn from its telescopic connection with the rear leg 12, and the board is thus free from the easel.
It can conveniently be held by the extension piece 20. The legs of the easel can then be allowed to collapse to a position in which they lie alongside each other, and if desired they can be secured by winding the elastic strap 40.around them.
In the configuration shown in Fig. 1, the board 10 lies in a substantially vertical plane; this being suitable, for example, for displaying signs and notices, or for use by children as a writing board or blackboard.
However, Fig. 2 shows an alternative configuration in which the board is extended at an angle suitable for use by a standing adult, for example a painter. To achieve this configuration, the extension piece 20 is mounted to the rear leg of the easel, as in Fig. 1. However, in this case the beam 30 is detached from its securing clip 34 and the cross member 28 is swung outwardly away from the rear of the board and fitted into the clips 38 on the front legs 14. The ends of the strap 40 are hooked over the projecting ends of the cross member 28 beyond the clip 38, and the board is now supported in a sloping configuration, as shown in Fig.
2. However, whereas in the configuration shown in Fig. 1 the board is held in a substantially fixed position, in the configuration shown in Fig. 2 the angle of the board can be adjusted simply by moving the foot of the rear leg 12 nearer or further from the front legs 14, as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2. The tension in the rubber strap 40 will tend to urge the rear leg towards the front legs, and prevents the easel from collapsing. However, friction between the feet of the legs and the ground on which the easel stands is sufficient to keep the legs in whatever position they are placed unless and until the rear leg is lifted from the ground to allow it to be swung inwardly or outwardly. Thus, the angle of the board can be adjusted in the simplest possible manner without the need for any adjusting screws or the like. It is indeed a feature of the present invention that it does not require any screws or nuts in its assembly. Assembling and dismantling the easel is extremely simple, and in the dismantled form there are only two parts, the legs and the board, with no ancillary parts which could become lost.
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 illustrate in more detail the type of pivotal connection between the legs at 16. Any kind of universal joint could be used here, but the connection shown is particularly simple and effective. This comprises a pivot pin 46 which passes diametrically and rotatably through the rear leg 12.
The projecting ends of the pin 46 pass diametrically through the front legs 14, and spring nuts 48 or other suitable retaining means are provided at the ends of the pivot pin 46. Compression springs 50 are provided on the pivot pin between the legs to provide necessary spacing without rattling, but these could be replaced by other spacing means, for example nylon washers. The most important feature of the pivot pin is that it is curved or angled, as particularly seen in Fig. 5, so that the longitudinal axes of its end portions carrying the front legs 14 are not co-linear. When the legs are in the collapsed condition, lying alongside each other as shown in Fig. 4, the pivot pin assumes the configuration indicated in Figs.
4 and 5. However, it will be apparent that the lower end of the rear leg 12 can be swung in one direction as shown by arrow
A, while the lower ends of the front legs 14 can be swung divergently in the other sense as indicated by the arrows B, so that the legs can be brought into the tripod configuration of Figs. 1 to 3.
If it is desired that the relative lengths of the front legs should be adjustable, for example for use on transversely uneven ground, an extension tube 13 could be provided which is detachably fitted to two or more clips 15 provided on the lower end portion of either of the legs 14. The clips frictionally hold the extension tube longitudinally at whatever extension is selected.
The clips could be provided on the extension tube instead of the legs, if desired. A pair of clips 17 may be provided on either side of the rear leg 12 to receive and retain the front legs 14 when the easel is in the closed condition. These clips could be provided on the front legs instead, if desired.
