This invention relates to a calender with rollers forming a nip in which the nip between a pair of rollers, one roller of which is obliquely displaceable, is bounded at the side by plates adapted to the geometrical shape of the nip region.
It is known that for the manufacture of sheets in a calender the nip of a pair of rollers is bounded at the side by limiting jaws (plates) in order to prevent the material accumulating in front of the nip (kneaded or plastic material) from running off at the sides (see the article by G Dost concerning «Herstellung kalandrierter PVC-Folien» (the manufacture of calendered PVC-sheets) in the periodical «Der Plastverarbeiter» 1962, book 6, pages 268 to 274, in particular page 269 However, although these plates are so designed that they can be pushed as close as practicable alongside the two rollers forming the nip, a considerable amount of the material accumulated can escape to the outside.
The distance between rollers and plates must be relatively large in order, in the case of a possible adjustment of one or both rollers, for example, in the case of oblique displacement (or so-called crossing) to avoid contact during calendering between roller(s) and plates which might result in damage to the ground roller surface Therefore, as a result of it being necessary to provide a relatively large separation from the rollers for safety reasons, the previously proposed plates do not provide adequate lateral confinement of the accumulating material In addition, the set spacing in the case of the abovementioned oblique adjustment is under certain circumstances made even larger; oblique adjustment is, however, a measure which is frequently necessary during sheet calendering.
Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to create a calender having boundary plates to prevent or reduce lateral overflow of the material accumulating in the nip of a pair of rollers, of which one is obliquely displaceable, which plates can be arranged at a very small distance from the two rollers without the risk of damage to the rollers during calendering, and for which the set narrow distance between rollers and plates is not varied, even on oblique adjustment of a roller.
The invention provides a calender having a pair of rollers forming a nip, wherein one roller of the pair is obliquely displaceable with respect to the other roller, that is to say, it can move from an initial position with a net diagonal movement, the nip is limited at each side by a boundary plate matching the geometrical shape of the nip, and there is provided means for causing corresponding displacement of the boundary plates in response to oblique relative displacement of the said obliquely-displaceable roller with respect to the other roller, and guide means for ensuring that, on being displaced, the boundary plates each follow a path that is concentric with the surface of the other roller of the pair.
In a calender according to the invention an originally narrow-set spacing between the pair of rollers and the nip boundary plates is retained even when one roller of the roller pair is obliquely adjusted Consequently, even in the case of very narrow adjustments of the plates damage to the rollers is precluded because it is not possible for there to be any contact between rollers and plates By means of the small spacing from the rollers 2 1,572,508 2 rendered possible by the displaceable arrangement of the plates in accordance with the invention, lateral escape of the accumulated material is substantially prevented.
The displacement means preferably comprises a control member which is connected to the bearings of the obliquely displaceable roller and, on relative displacement of that roller with respect to the other roller, causes a corresponding displacement of the boundary plates.
The control member may engage the boundary plates by way of a pin-and-slot connection, which preferably comprises a slot formed in each plate and the control member is in the form of a bar which serves as the pin To facilitate introduction of the control bar, each slot is preferably at the end remote from the other roller of the pair.
Instead, the control member may be arranged to act on the boundary plates by way of a cam surface.
Advantageously, a single control member is arranged to displace both boundary plates, although each plate can if desired be provided with its own control member.
The guide means preferably comprises defining a guide path and a corresponding guide element on each boundary plate for guiding the plate along the guide path The means defining a guide path is preferably a support plate adjacent to each boundary plate.
A calender according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows part of the apparatus in cross-section; Figure 2 shows in detail and in crosssection the displaceable arrangement of one of the boundary plates on a corresponding supporting plate; and Figure 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, rollers 1, 2, which form a roller nip 3, are the two inlet rollers of an F-calender (not illustrated) As is customary in such calenders, the roller 1 is both horizontally and vertically displaceable (and therefore obliquely displaceable), whilst the roller 2 is vertically displaceable (these possibilities of adjustment are indicated in Figure 1 by the arrows) The side ends of the roller nip 3 are limited by boundary plates 4 The plates 4 are so designed that they can be pushed very close alongside the two rollers 1 and 2 They are displaceably arranged on supporting plates 5, which are advantageously likewise substantially adapted to the geometrical shape of the nip region The plates 4 are joined by way of a control beam 7 to bearing members 10 of the obliquely-displaceable roller 1 by means of supports 8, between which the control beam is clamped In addition, the plates 4 have, at the upper edge of each side that faces the roller 1, a slot 9, in which the control beam 7 is located The beam 7 lies parallel to the roller 1 The slots 9 70 in the plates 4 are advantageously openended, thereby facilitating the introduction of the control beam 7 into the slots 9 The control beam 7 is a metal rod of circular cross-section Instead of providing supports 75 8, the beam may be arranged so that its ends are joined directly to the bearing members of the obliquely adjustable roller 1.
On oblique displacement of the roller 1 with respect to the roller 2, the adjusting 80 force is transmitted by way of the control beam 7 to the two plates 4 The plates 4 are movably attached to a supporting plate 5 each in such a manner that, when the roller 1 is obliquely displaced, they are moved on a 85 circular path which is concentric with the surface of the roller 2 On oblique displacement of the roller 1, the extent of the adjustment is transmitted to the plates 4 by way of the control beam 7 Thus the extent of the 90 displacement of the plates 4 corresponds to the extent of the relative movement of the rollers 1 and 2.
The plates 4 are guided by way of a guide means 6, along a path which is concentric 95 with the surface of the roller 2 During this movement the control beam 7 inevitably changes its position in the slots 9 to some extent As shown in Fig 2, the guide means 6 may consist of a T-shaped guide, attached to 100 the plate 4 by means of screws, and a corresponding groove-slide path in the supporting plate 5 extending concentrically with the surface of the roller 2 The guide means may instead consist of a dovetail or roller guide 105 fitted on the plates, and a corresponding groove-slide path in the supporting plates 5.
The groove-slide path in the supporting plate has to ensure that the plate 4 can move on a line concentric with the surface of the roller 110 2 The arrangement of the groove-slide path shown in the supporting plate 5 in accordance with Fig 2 is not the only arrangement that can be used for this purpose It is also possible to provide two or three groove-slide 115 paths for which the plate 4 has corresponding guides, provided that the previously mentioned condition for the groove-slide path is met.
The two supporting plates 5, and thus also 120 the plates 4, are so mounted that they are longitudinally displaceable in a direction parallel to the axes of rollers 1 and 2 The plates 5 are secured to guide blocks 13, which are slidably mounted on guide beams 11, 12, 125 which are themselves fixed at each end to the roller bearing members 10; the longitudinal adjustment is effected by means of a threaded shaft 14 The two plates 4 with their supporting plates 5 are therefore displace 130 1,572,508 3 1,572,508 able parallel to the axes rollers 1 and 2, and their separation can be varied as desired.
The plates 4 and the supporting plates 5 preferably consist of metal, more especially stainless steel.
