Description
PATENT SPECIFICATION
( 11) 1 585 046 ( 21) Application No 21042/78 ( 22) Filed 22 May 1978 ( 44) Complete Specification Published 18 Feb 1981 ( 51) INT CL 3 AO 1 D 35/26 ( 52) Index at Acceptance A 1 F FF ( 54) LAWN MOWER ( 71) I, WILLIAM CHARLES BLATCHFORD, a British subject, of 4 Dyers Buildings, Holborn, London, EC 1 N 2 JT, England do hereby declare the invention (which has been communicated to me by Flymo S A, a Swiss body corporate, of Altenstrasse 12, CH 6301 Zug, Switzerland) for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly de-
scribed in and by the following statement:-
This invention relates to a lawn mower of the type which in operation is supported on a cushion of air and comprises a knife which is rotated about a vertical axis by a driving unit, and a fan wheel rotating about the same axis, the knife and fan wheel being shrouded by a hood having one or more than one inlet opening for air to the air cushion.
Lawn mowers of this type are previously known, for instance in British Patent No.
929,610 Due to the fact that this type of lawn mower has no wheels but floats on a cushion of air it has the advantage that it can be easily moved over a lawn The only resistance it has to overcome is that which is created by the friction of un-cut grass blades against the lower front part of the hood.
This resistance can be considerable when cutting tall and heavy grass The object of this invention is to reduce this resistance and make the mower easy to handle.
The above object is achieved in that the hood in its front part has one or more than one roller.
The invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lawn mower in accordance with the invention, and Figure 2 is a vertical section to a larger scale through part of the mower.
As can be seen in Figure 1, the lawn mower has a hood 10 and a handle 11 pivotally supported on the hood The hood shrouds a fan wheel, not shown, which together with a knife 12 is fastened to the lower part of a vertical driving shaft The driving unit is placed on the hood 10 and is surrounded by a cover 13 The driving unit indicated in Fig 1 is an electric motor which via a cable 14 is connected to a switch 15 on the handle 11 The switch 15 is via a long cable 16 connected to a current source.
Instead of using an electric motor it is possible to use an internal combustion engine.
The hood 10 has an outer peripheral rim 17, which completely surrounds the hood and the lower part of which is situated in a horizontal plane 18 The object of the rim 17 is to limit the air cushion which is built up under the hood In the front part of the hood and in front of the rim 17 is a roller 19.
This roller is freely rotatable on a shaft 20 extending transversely to the direction of operation The roller 19 is of such diameter and is so placed that the lowest part of its periphery lies in the horizontal plane 18.
Thus it has no influence on the normal hovering of the mower The lowest part of the roller periphery may alternatively be situated above the plane 18.
The shaft 20 is supported at its end by two arms 21 extending forwards from the hood.
By using a roller 19 in front of the mower the sliding friction of the grass, which would normally be taken up by the surface 22 of the rim 17, is transmitted to the roller as rolling friction thus reducing the resistance and improving the handling of the mower when being hand-pushed into heavy tall grass It should be pointed out that it is desirable to use a roller which is light and has a radius as large as possible with respect to the radius of the shaft, because this will promote converting of sliding friction into rolling friction.
It is of course possible to use more than c ( 19) 2 1 585 046 2 one roller instead of a single roller in the front part of the mower.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown but can be modified within the scope of the following claims.
Claims (6)
WHAT I CLAIM IS:-
1 Lawn mower of the type which in operation is supported on a cushion of air and comprises a knife which is rotated about a vertical axis by a driving unit, and a fan wheel rotating about the same axis, the knife and fan wheel being shrouded by a hood having one or more than one inlet opening for air to the air cushion, wherein the hood in its front part has one or more than one roller.
2 Lawn mower according to Claim 1, wherein the or each roller is freely rotatable on a shaft which extends transversely to the operating direction.
3 Lawn mower according to Claim 2, wherein the hood has a rim extending around the periphery of the hood, the lower part of the rim being situated in a horizontal plane, and the shaft being placed above this plane.
4 Lawn mower according to Claim 3, wherein the lowest part of the periphery of the or each roller is situated above or in the horizontal plane.
Lawn mower according to any of Claims 1 4, wherein the shaft is supported by two arms extending forwards from the hood.
6 Lawn mower according to any preceding claim, wherein the roller or rollers are situated outside the part of the hood limiting the air cushion.
