Description

(54) IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO DRIVES FOR THE
ROLLS OF LAUNDRY FLATWORK IRONING MACHINES (7J) We, MANLOVE TULLIS GROUP
LIMITED, a British Company of Clydebank,
Dunbartonshire G8 I 2XE, Scotland, do hereby declare the invention for which we pray that a Patent may be granted to us, and the method by which it is to be performed to be particularly described in and by the following statement:
This invention relates to driving arrangements for the rolls of laundry flatwork ironing machines.
Flatwork ironing machines in commercial laundries normally have a series of ironing rolls comprising three, four, five or more rolls, all of which need to be driven at the same speed. Hitherto, one large electric motor has been employed driving all the rolls. It is an object of the invention to achieve a less expensive form of drive that is also more readily adapted to different sizes of ironers with different numbers of rolls.
According to the present invention, individual rolls are driven by respective individual motors through disengageable couplings, preferably of the eddy current type however, all the rolls of an ironer do not necessarily have a drive motor each, since two motors can drive two or three rolls, three motors can drive four or five rolls, and so on. Not only is this considerably less expensive than employing a single large electric motor but also it is readily possible to add another roll to an ironing machine with or without its own drive motor and eddy current coupling. A convenient power for each individual drive is found to be 10
H.P.
One arrangement in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, which shows a three-roll ironer in side elevation.
In the arrangement shown, two of the rolls 11, 12 are driven by respective individual 10 H.P. motors 13, 14 through eddy current drive coupling 15, 16, cogged belt transmissions 17,18 and shafts 19, 20. Each shaft 19, 20 is coupled to drive the respective roll shaft at right angles thereto bv gears (not shown). The shafts 19, 20 are also aligned with one another and with a corresponding shaft 21 for the third roll 22, all three aligned shafts 19, 20, 21 being coupled together by coupling 23, 24. In this way, the third roll 22 is driven although it does not have its own motor or eddy current drive coupling.
As can be seen, the side frame 25 of the ironer is in three sections 25a,25b,25c, one to each roller, so it is a simple matter to lengthen or shorten an ironer by adding or removing roll sections, powered or unpow- ered, as appropriate.
WHAT WE CLAIM IS:
1. A laundry flatwork ironing machine comprising a series of ironing rolls driven at the same speed, characterised in that individual rolls are driven by respective individual motors through disengageable couplings.
2. An ironing machine according to claim 1, wherein the disengageable couplings are of the eddy current type.
3. An ironing machine according to claim 1 or claim 2, comprising coupling means connecting together the shafts of all the rolls, whereby the speed of all rolls is kept the same.
4. An ironing machine according to claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3, wherein at least one roll in the series does not have a respective motor but is driven by its coupling to the other rolls.
5. An ironing machine according to any one of the preceding claims, built in sections, each section comprising side frames, a transverse ironing roll having shaft ends journalled in the side frames, a horizontal longitudinal shaft connected to drive the roll shaft and having its ends projecting fore and aft of the roll, said longitudinal shaft ends being adapted to receive coupling means for coupling the longitudinal shaft to the longitudinal shaft of the next section in the series, and most of the sections further comprising an electric motor and driving connections from the motor to the respective longitudinal shaft which driving connections include an eddy current drive coupling.
6. An ironing machine according to

6. An ironing machine according to
claim 5, wherein each electric motor and eddy current drive coupling assembly is mounted in association with one side frame of the respective section below the drive roll, and the eddy current coupling output shaft is connected to the respective longitudinal shaft through a cogged belt transmission.

7. A multi-roll laundry flatwork ironing machine built up in sections substantially as described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
