Abstract
Aliphatic and aromatic synthese occur during the destructive distillation of fuel by a process in which the charge is treated with flue gas in admixture with extraneous gas. The gases used include air, steam, hydrogen, tar &c. vapours, coal gas, water gas, blast-furnace gas, oxides of carbon, and aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons such as acetylene, olefines, hydrobenzenes, naphthenes, and phenols. The working temperature may range from 100 to 1500 DEG C., and the pressure from a partial vacuum of 14\yF Hg. to 100 atmospheres. Ionization of the gases may be effected as described in Specification 131,105. The production of benzol, toluol, and xylol is stated to be increased. Ethylene at a temperature of 500-700 DEG C. decomposes and forms acetylene which polymerizes to aromatic hydrocarbons; ethane at 675 DEG C. forms ethylene, and eventually carbon, hydrogen, and methane. In carrying out the invention, the gas mixture is introduced through flues perforated along their entire length. Specifications 136,880 and 143,602, [both in Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], also are referred to.
