Abstract

166,097. Coolidge, W. D. July 9, 1920. [Convention date]. Transformers.- R÷ntgenray apparatus operated by a source of current subject to fluctuations of voltage, is provided with means for controlling the emission of rays from the tube tc secure a predetermined radiographic exposure or effect over a working range of voltage even though the voltage of the source varies. In one arrangement an ordinary time switch is used and the heating current of the incandescent cathode of the tube is automatically varied as the supply voltage changes. In another arrangement the heating current for the cathode is maintained constant and a time switch automatically varies the predetermined time necessary to produce the desired effect with a steady voltage. In the first arrangement, the heating current for the cathode 2, Fig. 1, is obtained from a double transformer 3, wound on separate cores. The core 6, Fig. 4, of the main part 4, 8, provides a highly saturated magnetic circuit while the core 7 of the auxiliary part 5, 9 is open and operates far below saturation. The winding of the auxiliary secondary 9 is such that the E.M.F. in the two parts oppose each other and by properly proportioning the windings the resultant E.M.F. supplying the current to the cathode may be made to increase as the primary current decreases and vice versa, and so that the resultant radiographic effect for an exposure controlled by a time switch 25 is substantially constant over a wording range. In the second alternative method the cathode is heated with a current of substantially constant voltage and a time switch is used by which the time of operation is varied inversely with the square of the primary voltage. The current for heating the cathode may be obtained from a separate source of constant voltage, as from a. battery, or the arrangement above described may be used in which the secondary windines 8, 9 are properly proportioned to give a substantially constant voltage in the filament lighting circuit over a working range as described in Specification 104,404. In the time switch an induction disc 30, Fig. 3, is driven by the electromagnets 32, 33 in the primary circuit 12, 13. A movable plate 43 carrying the contact elements 54, 55 of the switch is adapted to be moved into gear with the pinion 44 on the shaft of the disc 30, by an electromagnet 45 when the control switch 50 is closed. A time pointer 56, mounted on the disc 43, is set to the period of exposure or operation required and a pin 53 on the gear wheel 52 is thereby separated to this extent from the switch 54, 55 which is normally closed and is in the circuit 48, 49 which is connected with the primary circuit. On closing the contact switch 50 the time switch gearing 51, 52, is brought into gear with the pinion 44, and the actual time of operation before the pin 53 opens the switch 54, 55 will depend upon and vary inversely as the square of the voltage in the primary circuit 12, 13 which control the disc 30.
