Abstract
13,702. Coplans. M. June 11. [Cognate Applications, 14,874/09, 21,135/09, and 27,155/09.] Liquids, purifying; filtering-media.-To remove suspended matter and dissolved gases from liquids, such as natural and mineral waters, sea-water, condensation water, sewage and waste water, trade effluents, and alcoholic liquids, a previously-formed inorganic colloidal substance is added, or reagents to form a colloid are added simultaneously, so that in either case a hydrosol is thoroughly distributed in the liquid and gives rise to a hydrogel which will envelope the impurities. The liquid is vigorously agitated to distribute the colloid, and the precipitate is allowed to settle or collect as scum, or it is separated centrifugally. Any colloidal hydrate or hydrosol of iron, alumina, metalumina, or silica, or colloidal forms of metals, or combinations of these may be used. When gases or very minute particles, such as dyestuffs, are to be removed from the liquid, powdered charcoal is added either before or with the colloid. A suitable hydrogel is produced by the addition of a powder consisting of calcium oxide, aluminium sulphate, and charcoal, the substances being sufficiently anhydrous to ensure that no reaction will take place before the mixture is used. Starch, kaolin, or magnesium oxide may be added to keep the powder dry. Suitable colloids are also obtained, by the interaction of ammonia, soda, potash, or lime with alum, alurninium sulphate, or a per-salt of iron. The hydrosol will usually be converted into hydrogel by agitation, but an electrolyte may be added to assist the transformation. Anti-precipitating substances, such as glue or gelatine present in the liquid, must be neutralized by means of sodium carbonate, tannin, or the like before the treatment with colloid. Free acid or alkali must also be neutralized. Liquid containing a large quantity of suspended matter may be subjected to preliminary centrifugal separation with or without the addition of alum, magnesium or aluminium sulphate, quinine, or potassium permanganate. The soluble salts in sea-water or hard water are previously rendered insoluble by treatment with sodium or potassium carbonate. According to Provisional Specification 27,155/09, a hydrogel produced as described may be placed as a filtering-medium on a supporting substance, such as sand, gravel, felt, or asbestos, or used as a floating layer in apparatus consisting of alternate weirs and baffle-plates. In Provisional Specification 14,874/09 it is stated that the hydrogel may be produced in situ in the upper layers of a filter. Provisional Specification 21,135/09 refers to the use of solutions of the carbonates, bi-carbonates, hydrates, and silicates of soda and potash as precipitants.
