Abstract
14,006. Krupp Akt.-Ges., F. Oct. 17, 1908, [Convention date]. Ordnance breech mechanism.-Relates to semiautomatic guns. According to the invention, two separately acting spring accumulators, which effect the opening and closing of the breech, are both tensioned during the recoil by an inertia device, mounted upon the gun-barrel. The breech-block C, Figs. 1 and 3, is raised and lowered by cranks D mounted upon a hollow transverse shaft E provided at one end with a flange e<2> and handle e<1>. A spindle O passes through the shaft E, and carries at its extremities the drums J, N of the breech closing and opening springs L, P. The spring L is connected at its ends to the drum J and shaft E, and the ends of the spring P are connected to the drum N and to the boss q<1> of a disk Q fixed to the gunbarrel A. Both springs tend to rotate the drums in the same direction-i.e. in the reverse direction to the arrow x, Fig. 1; but in the breech-closed position, shown in Fig. 1, this rotation is prevented by a stop a<2> on the gun which is engaged by a projection n<1> on the drum N. The flange e’ of the shaft E is formed with a notch e<3>, shown in sectional plan in Fig. 6, which, when the breech is closed, is opposite the end of the arm G of a lever G, G<1> pivoted to the gun-breech and pressed outwards by a spring g<3>. In the firing position, the lever-arm G<1> is engaged by a stop-bar b<1> on the gun and engagement with the notch e<3> is prevented. The drum J is formed with a weight i<3>, and has a notch i<1> which, when the drum J is rotated, is engaged by a spring bolt H mounted in the handle e<1>. When the gun recoils, the weight i’ by its inertia rotates the drum J, and hence the drum N, into the position shown in Fig. 6, and tensions the springs L, P. The drums are retained in this position by the bolt H entering the notch i<1>. At the same time, the lever G, G<1> moves away from the stop b<1> and the end G enters the notch e<3> and locks the shaft E. At the end of the counterrecoil, the lever G, G<1> again engages the stop b<1> and releases the shaft E, which, however, remains locked by the bolt H to the drums J, N. The breech-opening spring P, now being free, rotates the drum N, shaft O, drum J, and shaft E, and thereby opens the breech, and the breech-block is held in its depressed position by hooks m<3> on the extractor arms M which enter notches c’ in the block. At the end of the opening movement, a lug h<2> on the bolt H engages with an incline a3 on the gun and withdraws the bolt, so that, when the hooks m<3> are disengaged by the insertion of a fresh cartridge into the gun, the closing-spring L is free to re-act and rotate the shaft E to close the breech.
