Abstract
5170. Joel, H. F. March 1. Battery lamps.-A portable lamp for use in mines and the like is provided with a detachable screw or bayonet union ring for connecting the case to the lantern and surrounding the joint; means are also provided for positioning the switch, lamp, and battery contacts. In the form shown in Fig. 1, a cover H carrying a cage L and a glass cylinder is flanged to rest on the case C and is clamped by a flanged ring R threaded on the case, the parts being preferably of spun metal and the cage in one piece. A switch S and lamp contact P are adapted to engage the battery terminals J, K respectively. The positioning means consist of a set-pin A on the lantern and a projection E on the battery adapted to engage corresponding recesses in the case; the terminals J. K being provided with recesses to fit over square or polygonal projections M on the battery lugs. A hasp U on the ring is adapted to be locked to a staple V on the case by a pin, lock, or lead rivet. A number of set-screws X secure the cage to the cover and bear against the ring R so that when the latter is unscrewed the circuit is broken before the contacts are exposed as in Specification 4019/11; or there may be a collar on the cage instead of set-screws, or the ring may be screwed on the lantern. Fig. 3 shows a modification having a nut N screwed into the base of the cage to clamp the glass cylinder, the cover H being sprung into the nut so as to be readily detachable, slots are provided in the nut for actuating it, and the hasp U is carried by a loose ring on the ring R; or the cover H may be held by a separate springy ring. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the ring has one or two inclined bayonet holes O for engaging corresponding lugs Z on the case, the lower periphery of the ring being enlarged or the ring bulged adjacent to the holes to pass over the lugs; or the lantern and cover H may have tubular flanges provided with vertical slots to engage the lugs Z, and the engaging surfaces may be conical to make the joint tight without packing. In another form, the lantern is placed under the battery and a conductor passing down the side of the battery engages a groove in the case to position the battery, the conductor being connected to a spring plunger on the bottom of the case and a screw switch provided in the top of the case as described in Specifications 11,106/08 and 9693/09. In other forms the lantern may be fixed to the side of the case, which may be square. According to the Provisional Specification, the cover may be screwed into the base of the cage and optionally provided on its underside with an insulated ring to engage a spring terminal, the switch engaging an insulated stud on the top of the cover; or the lantern may be screwed directly into or over the case, or may be bayonet-jointed to it, the switch being adapted to unscrew to permit the lateral movement required for locking or unlocking the bayonet joint, and being positioned over a hole in the cover when the parts are locked.
