Abstract
13,608. Carter, R. S. June 4, 1913, [Convention date]. Dash-pots; laminar springs. – Consists in combining with the usual laminar springs a liquidcontaining shock-absorber in which pressure is transmitted to the liquid through a spring or yielding piston which prevents shocks arising from the inertia of the liquid during the whole of the shock-resisting movement. In the form shown in section in Fig. 2, a laminar spring 12 is bolted to a hub 6 journaled in a casing 1, filled with fluid and fixed to the vehicle chassis, by bolts 3, Fig. 3. The hub 6 is fixed to an arm 8 connected by a link 15 with the vehicle axle. When the axle receives a jolt, the hub 6 causes the spring 12 to oscillate in the casing 1. This oscillation is resisted by the contained fluid, the amount of resistance depending on (1) the clearance between the spring 12 and the walls of the casing 1, (2) the resiliency of the spring, which flexes and affords a passage for the fluid at its free end, (3) the position of a regulating-screw 20 which is adapted to restrict a by-pass 19 affording a passage for the fluid from one side of the spring 12 to the other. A depression 21 in this by-pass faces the screw 20 when the spring 12 is in its central position in the casing 1, so that slight shocks are not appreciably resisted by the absorber. A spring presses the hub 6 into fluid-tight contact with the casing, and grooves may be cut into the end of the hub to enable the pressure fluid to perform the same function. The leaves of the spring 12 on each side of the centre leaf may be fish-tail shaped. The spring 12 may be of the form shown in Fig. 4 when different resistance is required for opposite movements of the blade, and this may be supplemented by the provision of a hole in one or more of the longer leaves, normally covered by the next shorter leaf or leaves. The fluid is introduced into the casing through ports 18. The Specification as open to inspection under Section 91 (3) (a) also describes means for adjusting the absorber casing to enable the spring 12 to be brought to a central position for any load. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
