Abstract

193,959. Fairweather, W. C., (Underwood Typewriter Co.). Dec. 1, 1921. Sound-deadening cases.-A case comprises a body 30 resting on a mat 74 and having overhanging sides 40. the typewriter 10 being inserted by opening a cover 31 and passing the keyboard frame 12 through an opening 38 in the body. The body and cover may consist of integral diecastings. A cross-plate 44 at the bottom of the opening 38 is formed with slots 163a, 87a, 94 for receiving the side plates 163 of the typewriter and permitting operation of the space-bar levers 87, and the shift-key levers 94, respectively. The body is provided at the front and rear with lugs 70 and brackets 160 for receiving the feet 11 of the typewriter. If the case is lifted, the mat yields and the typewriter seats on the brackets and the bottom of the slots 163a. The body is lined with pieces 47, 48, 76 of felt &c. which are mitred at the meeting-edges, and the cross-plate 44 is lined with a piece 55 of felt &c. having slots in register with the slots in the cross-plate. The top 55 of the lining piece 55 is free and is depressed by the shift-releasing shaft 19. Additional lining-pieces are placed at the sides of the opening 38. The typewriter is provided at the bottom with a piece 26 of felt extending to the guide-comb 60, and is provided also with a detachable semi-circular plate 61 for closing the type-basket, the plate having fingers 65, 65 engaging the front plate 63 of the typewriter. The plates 61, 63 are provided with lining-pieces 67, 63. The body is formed with a bead 45 receiving securing-screws 75, 77 for the mat 74 and some of the lining-pieces. The cover 31 is hinged at 32 to the body, and is provided with a window 93 which seats in a flanged rib 92, and is secured at the ends by bars 96, a strip 95 of leather &c. being placed in the seat. The cover is provided with lining-pieces 88, 88 , the lining- piece 88 having a smooth facing 90 for preventing the paper P from catching. The cover is connected at each end to a counterbalancing-device consisting of a spring arranged in a tube 123 and engaging the bottom of a plunger on a rod 119, the tube and rod being pivoted to the body and cover respectively. A buffer-spring engages the top of the plunger. The line-spacing lever 23, carriage-returning arm 24, and carriage-releasing lever 25 pass between two cushions which are normally in contact but permit movement of the members 23, 24, 25. The cushions preferably consist of rubber tubes 109 secured to the bodv and cover by means of strips 110 of felt &c., the. ends of the top strip being clamped between a bead 104 on the cover and a curved strip 112 secured by a strip 114, and the ends of the bottom strip being clamped between a bead 116 on the body and a curved strip 118 secured by a strip 83. When the cover is closed, the side lining-pieces 89a, 48 are in contact, the cover having extensions 84 for concealing the abutting edges, and ears 85 for concealing the ends of the tubes 109. Carriage-releasing arrangements; line-spacing mechanism. – The carriage-releasing lever 25 swings horizontally on a pivot 151, and is formed with a fork 155 engaging the usual releasing-lever 148 on the paper-carriage 20. The lever 25 may be mounted on a bracket 169 which is formed with the carriage-returning arm 24 and is detachably secured to the front rail 139 of the papercarriage. To overcome the resistance of the cushions 109, the line-spacing lever 23 may ba provided with an auxiliary returning-spring.
