Abstract

A flowmeter for particulate solids has a plate (6) inclined to the direction in which a flow of solids impinges on the plate. The plate (6) is supported by one or more cantilevers (12) on each of which strain gauges (16a-d) are located, for the purpose of measuring the difference between the bending moments of each cantilever at spaced apart positions and thereby deducing the magnitude of the horizontal force on the plate, and hence the rate of flow of solids impinging on the plate. The cantilevers may extend vertically. By determining a force rather than a movement of the plate errors due to the flow impinging on different points across the plate are avoided.
