QUEENSLAND. 4000

1 Lj COMPLETE SPECIFICATION FOR THE INVENTION ENTITLED: «HARDENING WEAR PLATES AND THE LIKE» The following statement is a full description of the invention including the best method of performing it known to the applicant.
4 THIS INVENTION relates to hardening wear plates and the like.
Certain areas of earthmoving equipment, such as the sole and heel plates of earthmoving and dragline buckets, and the crutch areas of the large chain links used in such equipment, are subject to very considerable abrasion and consequent wear, which necessitates costly and time-consuming maintenance, repair and replacement.
To overcome or materially reduce this problem it has been proposed to weld wear blocks, wear plates, shrouds, blocks for bushes and the like to the areas which have been, or will be, subjected to abrasive wear, and examples of these are described in the specifications of our Australian Patents Nos. 540850 and 577726. In such a wear block or the like, an open or hollow surround of mild steel is welded to a base plate and filled with a deposition of hard-face welding material, the mild steel surround and/or base then being welded to the area subject to undue abrasive wear.
Although wear blocks, plates, shrouds and the like of this type have been found to be in general very effective in achieving the object for which they have been devised, instances have occurred of loss of the wear-resistant integers due to restricted mild steel areas available for welding to the surfaces to be protected, and the height of the integers above the surfaces.
The present invention has been devised with the general object of overcoming the said present disadvantage by providing wear plates, blocks, shrouds and the like which, though highly resistant to abrasion, and not of undue height, still have side edges of sufficient depth to enable good welding to a surface to be protected.
Broadly, the invention resides in a method of making a wear plate for welding to a surface as a wear 2 block, plate, shroud, bush or the like including the step of working a surface of a mild steel plate with a carbon electrode to cause fusion of the surface of the plate and the penetration into the plate from the said surface of carbon from the electrode. Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description.
According to one embodiment of the invention, given by way of illustrative example only, a shroud for the crutch area of a heavy chain link is substantially of the configuration of that described and illustrated in the specification of our Patent No. 577726; that is to say, it is of mild steel plate and, in plan view, substantially of crescent or arcuate shape with a number of substantially radial re-entrant recesses from its concave edge.
The flat outer face of the shroud plate is hardened by a process of carbon electrode working so as to result in a fusing of the mild steel at and near to the surface and a penetration into the fused mild steel of carbon from the electrode or electrodes. Experiments have shown that in a mild steel plate with a thickness of 8mm. the carbon dilution or penetration may be up to 2mm. in depth. The depth in any particular case however, will be dependent on a number of factors, including the thickness of the mild steel base and its capability to absorb wear, the size of the carbon rod and the amperage of the electrical current used.
The process may be carried out by the use of a single electrode or multiple electrodes working from a conventional robot- or manually-operated power source and applied to one face of a plate resulting in fusing and penetration of the plate surface The penetration of the carbon into the mild steel face of the base results in a very considerable hardening of the wear-resistant surface without any 3 significant increase in depth of the base plate which therefore, when welded about its edges to the area to be protected, will not be of any excessive height and therefore will be far less liable to breaking away from the article to which it is applied.
Wear plates, shrouds, blocks and the like made according to the present invention will be found to be simple and economical to manufacture, due largely to the elimination of the necessity to use substantial depositions of hardface weld deposition. Nevertheless, the wear resistant qualities of the articles will be found to be very high.
It will, of course, be understood that the 4444 o, method described, and the articles made according to the 15 method, may be subject to many modifications which will 4 be readily understood by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope and ambit of the 4 44 invention hereinafter claimed.
