The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me:- -1 5020 -2- METHOD AND EQUIPMENT FOR LAYING UNDERGROUND AN ELONGATED ELEMENT The present invention relates to a method and equipment for the underground laying of an elongated element.
It is known that when electric cables such as telecommunication cables, flexible hoses or elongated elements in general, are laid on submarine soundings, they are housed in appropriate trenches to avoid possible damage thereto. On account of the often large sea depth, and due to the consequent difficulty for operators to work at such depths, the laying of such elongated elements is carried out by means of laying S machines, remotely controlled by the tender ship, which, .9,4 +oo :progressively advancing, digs the trench and situate the elongated element therein.
r. ,,More particularly, said machines lift the elongated element pass it along a sliding means thereon, and then lay it on the bottom of the trench. Due to the high friction 94 generated between the elongated element and the sliding means, the portion of elongated element situated downstream of the laying machine is subject to a tension which is greater than that applied to the portion situated upstream, so that, a 9s*9 °surplus of elongated element may accumulate upstream of the laying machine.
On account of the extremely large length of such elongated elements, the accumulated surplus can become quite considerable Sin a very short time. In fact, the elongated element may bend, which may impair it, or may be trapped under the laying machine, which results in a high risk of damage to itself 2037E SAMD/0361a and/or the latter.
To eliminate this disadvantage, some laying machines are provided with a mechanical moving arm in a front part thereof terminating with a guide through which the elongated element may pass. When a surplus of elongated element accumulates upstream of the laying machine, the mechanical arm is raised, lifting the elongated element, avoiding the risk of damage to either the elongated member and/or the laying machine.
Said machines, however, solve the problem only in part, since they are unable to transfer the accumulated surplus of said elongated element from upstream to downstream, to consequently avoid accumulation during the progressive advancement of the machine.
The present invention seeks to overcome the above indicated drawbacks and to provide a method and equipment for laying an underground element, which, is able to prevent the accumulation of surplus elongated element upstream of the laying equipment.
To achieve this aim, the the present invention provides a method the laying of an elongated element in a trench in the ground, which element has previously been laid on the ground, with apparatus which advances in a predetermined direction and which forms said trench, lifts said element from the ground at the upstream side of the apparatus and Sthen deposits said element in said trench at the downstream side of the apparatus, said apparatus having ways for receiving and slidably engaging said element in its passage S. from the upstream side of said apparatus to the downstream side thereof, whereby a first portion of said element at said downstream side of said apparatus is subjected to a first tension force in the direction of advance of said apparatus due to the friction between said ways and said element and to the resistance to movement of the portion of said element deposited in said trench and a second portion of said element upstream of said apparatus is subjected to second tension force in the opposite direction at the upstream side of said ways due to the weight of the lifted At/-3 AMD/0361a portion of said element upstream of said apparatus and to the resistance to movement of the portion of said element upstream of said apparatus, the method of at least partially offsetting any difference between said first tension forced applied to said elongated element in the first-mentioned said direction and said second tension applied to said element in said opposite direction which comprises engaging said element intermediate said upstream side and said downstream side of said apparatus and applying a third tension force to said element in the direction opposite to the direction of advance of said apparatus at least equal to said first tension force.
In a preferred embodiment, the tension of said portion of elongated element situated upstream of the laying equipment is continuously adjusted to keep it at about a pre-established optimum value. In a second preferred embodiment, the tension is alternatively maintained within pre-established minimum and maximum values. When it is lower than the pre-established minimum value, the means advancing the laying equipment is stopped, whilst, when it is higher than the pre-established maximum value, the active tension is no longer applied to the elongated element.
o The present invention also provides an equipment for underground housing into a trench an elongated element, previously disposed on the ground or on the submarine soundinas, along a pre-established laying line, said equipment comprising: advancing means for moving said equipment, inside which the elongated element slides, along the pre-established laying line, digging means, brought by the equipment, which digs a trench upstream this latter, said equipment being characterised in that it provides: a position sensor means of the elongated element S4 S ‘0 i ii equipment at about a pre-established value oz within a pre-established range of values.
Further Jims and advantages of the present invention will be more clearly apparent from the following detailed description and from the appended drawings, given only by way of non-limiting example, in which: Fig. 1 illustrates the equipment for laying cables and the like, in accordance with the present invention; and, Fig. 2 details an enlarged representation of the equipment of Fig. i.
With reference to Fig. 1, the laying equipment 1 advances 9 @8 ‘o on a submarine sounding to lay an elongated element 3 egao *89s oo underground, which previously was rested on top of said sounding 2. The laying equipment 1 comprises, an electric o motor, the power to which is fed by a cable 4 from the tender ship, and, hydraulic devices actuated by the electric motor.
*Said hydraulic devices actuate location means or tracks for the advancement of the equipment, a power-shovel 6 for digging a trench 7, and a tensioning member 8. In an alternative embodiment, the advancement of the laying equipment can be carried out by being towed by the tender ship.

a in Fig. 2, is arranged in a central section 9 of a sliding means 10 which also contains a front section 11 and a rear section 12. The front section 11 of the equipment 1 carries a moving arm 13 which, at the end thereof is provided with a ring 18, through which the elongated element 3 is passed, acting as a position sensor for the latter.
2037E 6 Fig. 2 represents a tensioning member 8 of Fig i, which is comprised of two pairs of motor-driven facing rollers 14a, 14b and 15a, 15b. Each roller may be driven separately, or may be driven in unison. Rollers 14a and 15a are assembled on a fixed support 15, whilst rollers 14b and 15b are mounted on a balance-type movable device 16 actuated by a jack 17.
The cylindrical surfaces of all the four rollers 14a, 14b, and 15b are concave, and are provided with notches therearound. They are constructed of highly adherent material, such as rubber or resin having a high friction coefficient, in order to ensure a good grip of the elongated element 3 without r l damaging same.
itIn an alternative embodiment, not illustrated herein, the r t rollers may be replaced by tracks having concave facing C t surfaces and constructed of highly adherent material. In a further alternative embodiment, also not illustrated herein, the gripping force exerted by the rollers or the tracks on the elongated element may be facilitated by springs or counterweights rather than by the jack 17.
*000 In operation, a shallow-water diver 19 firstly inserts the elongated element 3 through the laying equipment 1 and in *450 particular, through ring 18 of the moving arm 13, into the sliding means 9, 10, 11, 12 and between the pairs of rollers 14a, 14b and 15a, 15b of the tensioning member 8. The jack 17 is then actuated such that the pairs of rollers exert a gripping action on the elongated element 3.
As the laying equipment advances, the front part 11 of the 2037E -t -7guide 10 raises the elongated element 3 upstream, the tensioning member 8 applies a tension force to said elongated element 3, the power-shovel 6 digs a trench 7, and the rear part 12 of the sliding way 10 positions the elongated element 3 within said trench 7.
The tensioning member 8 applies an active tension force to the elongated element 3 in the direction opposite to the direction of advancement of equipment i, such that the upstream portion of said elongated element is subjected to a tension equal to, or higher than that of the downstream portion.
Therefore, any surplus of elongated element cannot accumulate VVupstream.
r The laying equipment 1 is also provided with a conventional, locked-loop type control circuit, not illustrated herein, which keeps the upstream portion of the elongated

element under a constant tension at approximately a pre-established value or within a pre-established range of values. The control circuit comprises position transducers T1 and T2, for example, magnetic type transducers, arranged above 14 and below the movable arm 13, adapted to drive the motors of the tensioning member 8.

therefore the tension to which the upstream portion of the elongated element 3 is subjected, and the position transducers T1 and T2 convert this position into an electrical signal, which in turn determines the torque to be applied by the motors or the tensioning member 8 to the elongated element 3 via the dragging rollers or tracks.
2037E i- i- -8- Once the optimum tension to be applied to the upstream portions of the elongated element 3 and consequently the position of said portion has been pre-established, the motors of the tensioning member 8 may be actuated to generate a torque capable of maintaining such a position.
If the position of the upstream portion of the elongated element lowers, due to the tension applied to said portion being smaller than the optimum tension, the motors of the tensioning member 8 consequently increase the torque applied to said elongated element 3 to bring the tension back to its pre-established value.
t q Vice versa, if the position of the upstream portion of the elongated element rises, due to the tension applied to said F portion being greater than the optimum tension, the motors of t ‘C the tensioning member 8 consequently reduce the torque applied on said elongated element 3, to bring the tension back to its pre-established value.
In this way, the tension applied by the tensioning member 8 to the elongated member 3 is continuously adjusted, according to the position of the upstream portion of the elongated element 3, such that said regulation can be defined as 114 «analogue». In an alternative embodiment, said regulation can be of a «digital» type.
In this case the position transducers T1 and T2 are switches which limit the minimum and maximum allowable positions of the elongated element 3. Moreover, it is not possible to vary the amount of torque applied by the tensioning member 8 to said elongated member 3.
2037E .i i 9 The upper switch T1 controls the motors of the tensioning member 8, whilst the lower switch T2 controls the means for advancing the laying equipment. When the movable arm 13 closes the lower switch T2, the upstream portion of elongated element 3 is consequently loose and begins to excessively accumulate.
The closure of said switch stops the forward motion of the equipment i, whilst the tensioning member 8 transfers the accumulated length from upstream of the equipment to downstream thereof.
When all the surplus element has been transferred downstream, the portion of elongated element upstream the equipment is stretched within the pre-established limits. The e or movable arm 13 then rises, the lower switch T2 re-opens and the equipment 1 again proceeds to advance.
g o t When the movable arm 13 closes the upper switch TI, due to the portion of elongated element 3 upstream equipment 1 being under excess tension, and the closure of said switch stops the «P motors of the tensioning member 8, the rollers or the traclks are left to grip the elongated element. Therefore, the tensioning member 8 does not continue to stretch the elongated element 3 whilst the laying equipment 1 proceeds to advance.
ceQ o Once the tension of the upstream portion of the elongated element has dropped to within its pre-established limits, the elements and the moving arm 13 are lowered, consequently re-opening the upper switch Tl, which re-starts the motors of the tensioning member 8 and re-applies an active tension to the elongated element 3. In both of the described solutions, the amount of torque and the distance between the position 2037E r I- r 10 transducers or the switches are selected as a function of the characteristics of the elongated elements to be laid underground, such that the excess accumulation of elongated element is prevented.
From the above description, it is evident that the invention achieves the goal that during the underground laying of the elongated element, the upstream accumulation of elongated element is avoided. In fact, the tensioning member 8 applies an active tension force to said elongated element suitable to overcome resistance to the advancement due to friction generated during the passage of the elongated element

*o Further, the locked-loop type control circuit ensures that 4 S the upstream portion of elongated element is always subjected to optimum tension forces to prevent any damage to the elongated element or to the laying equipment.
41 Also, the balance-type movable device allows independent e4 movement of the rollers or tracks, such that, if the elongated element is of enlarged cross-section, it can still pass beyond tars the tensioning member without the risk of being squeezed.
The method and equipment forming the objects of the I9** present invention have been described with reference to the slo laying of underground elongated elements on submarine soundings where the operator access is very difficult. It is also evident that the invention can be used for laying elements underground on the earth’s surface, allowing greater mechanisation and automation of the laying operation.
It should be understood that, the embodiments herein 2037E I 11 described are provided by way of example only in respect of the n S method and equipment for the~laying of underground elongated elements. Other modifications and variations are possible and should be considered to fall within the scope of the invention o as described and claimed herein.

A laying method as set forth in claim i, wherein said third tension force applied to said elongated element is controlled in a continuous manner so that said second tension force is substantially equal to a prL .established value, and so that when the tension on said second portion upstream of said apparatus is lower than said 12 C5a4V l±_eIIIClILLu u±Lapu 'u upstream o0r Lne iaying apparatus is nigner than said prc- established maximum value. A laying method as set forth in claim 1, wherein the tension on said second portion of said elongated element disposed upstream of said laying apparatus is maintained between pre-established minimum and maximum values. 4. A laying method as set forth in claim 3 wherein the advance of said laying apparatus is stopped when the tension of said second portion of said elongated element disposed upstream said apparatus is lower than said pre-established minimum value. A laying method as set forth in claim 3, wherein said third tension force is discontinued when the tension on said Esecond portion of said elongated element disposed upstream of the laying apparatus is higher than said pre-established maximum value. 6. In apparatus for laying into a trench an elongated element which has previously been laid on the ground, said apparatus comprising advancing means for advancing said apparatus in a predetermined direction, lifting means at the upstream side of said apparatus for lifting said element and ways for receiving and slidably engaging said elongated element as said element passes from the upstream side to the downstream side of said apparatus, whereby a first portion of said element at said downstream side of said apparatus is subjected to a first tension force in the direction of advance of said apparatus due to the friction between said ways and said element and to the resistance to movement of the portion of said element deposited in said trench and a 'Y Isecond portion of said element upstream of said apparatus is subjected to second tension force in the opposite direction at the upstream side of said ways due to the weight of the lifted portion of said element upstream of said apparatus and to the resistance to movement of the portion of said element upstream of said apparatus, the improvement comprising variable tensioning means at said ways engageable 13 5020 AMD/0361a with said elongated element for applying a tension force to said element acting in the direction opposite to the direction of advancement of the laying apparatus which subjects the second portion of said elongated element disposed upstream of said apparatus to a variable tension force dependent upon and at least equal to the first tension force on the first portion of said elongated element disposed downstream of said apparatus, said elongated element disposed upstream of the laying apparatus is higher than said pre-established maximum value. 7. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein said tensioning means comprises at least one pair of facing rollers for engaging said element and motor means for driving said rollers. 8. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein said tensioning means comprises at least one pair of facing tracks and motor means for driving said tracks. 9. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein the facing surfaces of said rollers are concave and partially surrounding said element and are provided with notches. 10. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein the facing surfaces of said rollers are made of an elastomeric o, material having a high friction coefficient. 11. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 8 wherein the facing surfaces of said tracks are made of an elastomeric S- material having a high friction coefficient. 12. Laying aparatus as set forth in claim 7 wherein one of riooe said pair of rollers is mounted from a fixed support whereas the other of said pair of rollers is mounted from a mounting device which is movable toward an elongated element between said pair of rollers. 13. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 12 further comprising a jack connected to said mounting device for S 5 moving the latter toward an elongated element. 14. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 12 further comprising spring means connected to said mounting device for urging the latter toward an elongated element. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein said 14 B- AMD/0361a tensioning means comprises two pairs of facing rollers, one of the two pairs of rollers facing the other of the pairs of rollers for receiving an elongated element between said one pair of rollers and said other pair of rollers, motor means for driving at least two of said rollers and a mounting device on which one of said two pairs of rollers is mounted, said mounting device being of the balance type and urging the last-mentioned said one of said two pairs of rollers towards an elongated element between the pairs of rollers. 16. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 6 further comprising detecting means upstream of said apparatus for detecting the position of an elongated element in advance of said ways and wherein said tensioning means is controlled by said detecting means for applying said tension force in an amount within a predetermined range. 17. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 16, wherein said detecting means comprises a movable arm on said apparatus and engageable with a portion of said elongated element upstream of said apparatus. 18. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 17 wherein said detecting means further comprises a pair of transducers operable by said arm, one of said pair of transducers being operable by said arm when the tension force on said elongated element causes said portion thereof to rise by at least a predetermined amount above a predetermined position Sand the other of said pair of transducers being operable by said arm when the tension force on said elongated element S causes said portion thereof to lower by at least a predetermined amount below said predetermined position and wherein said tensioning means comprises drivable means engageable with said elongated element and motor means for driving said drivable means, at least one of said pair of transducers being connected to said motor means for controlling the movement of said drivable means. 19. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 18 wherein both of said transducers are connected to said motor means through regulating means which varies the torque of said motor means in accordance with the position of said arm, t AMD/0361a said one of said pair of transducers, when operated, decreasing said torque and said other of said pair of transducers, when operated, increasing said torque. Laying apparatus as set forth in claim 18 wherein said one of said pair of transducers is a first switch and said other of said pair of transducers is a second switch and wherein said second switch is connected to said advancing means for deenergising and advancing means and wherein said first switch is connected to said motor means for deenergising said motor means. 21. A method of laying an elongated element in a trench in the ground, substantially as herein described. 22.
