Printed by C 1. THOMPSON. Commonwealth Government Printer, Canberra is 250 0 S 0* This invention relates to a sunshade and relates particularly to a sunshade for removable attachment to a chair, particularly outside chairs such as aluminium-framed, fold-up chairs and the like.
On many occasions when outdoor chairs are being used, the people ‘asing such chairs are required to wear hats or the like to obtain some protection from the sun. However, while hats may adequately protect the head of the wearer, they do not adequately protect other parts ‘of the rbody, paiticularly when sitting in a chair.
Umbrellas are also commonly used for shade. However, they can be awkward to hold or to appropriately secure in position in relation to the chair. In many situations, it is not possible to use a shade umbrella.
It is therefore desirable to provide a sunshade which can be used in conjunction with an outdoor chair.
It is also desirable to provide a sunshade which is of relatively simple construction, which is easy to manufacture and is relatively economical.
It is also desirable to provide a sunshade which can be quickly and simply located in position on a chair.
It is also desirable to provide a sunshade which can be folded for ease of transport.
In accordance with one aspect of the invention there is provided a stnshade comprising first and recond frame members, the first frame member having means for releasably attaching the first frame member to a chair back, the second frame member having an end section hinged or releasably attached to an upper end portion of the first frame member, support means operatively associated with tie frame members to support the frame members at an angle to each other of between degrees and 120 degrees, said support means comprising either a pair of struts pivotally connected to each frame member whereby the second frame member, when attached to the first frame member, extends therefrom with tie struts holding the second frame member in the supported iposition or struts extending from the first frame member and releasably engaged by the second frame member which is hinged to the first frame member, and shade means on at least the second frame member.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the second frame member is releasably engaged with the first frame member.
For transportation purposos, the rear end of the second frame member -2is disengaged from the upper end of the first frame member and the members are moved to a substantially flat configuration.
At least the second frat.., member will have a shade cloth or other covering thereon so as to shade an occupier of the chair. The shade cloth may extend down the first frame member to provide additional shade protection. Additionally, the shade cloth may extend downwardly from the second frame member to provide shade at the sides thereof. If desired, wing members may extend from the second frame member to extend the lateral dimension of the shading area.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the lower end of each arm of the first frame member is provided with clip means for engaging with a frame member of the chair on which the shade is to be mounted. In the most simplest form; such clip means includes a C-shaped end on each arm which engages a tubular frame portion.
Alternatively, an attaching means may c.mprise a spacing plate which engages the chair back, ad a fabric web which, together with the plate, forms a sleeve which engages over the chair back. The sleeve may be attached to the arms of the first frame member and thereby -upports the unis in the appropriate •relationship to the chair back.
•eoe Be. 00 The first frame member and the second frame member may be formed of metal rod material which is able to be bent to the desired shapes to form the Cshaped ends of the arms of the first frame member and shaped upper ends of the arms to enable releasable engagement with the rear end of the second frame member.
o e In a preferred form of the invention, the first frame mewber is pivotally 00o• o attached to the second frame membar, and struts on the members support them in the desired angular relationship.
C. 0 In order that the invention is more readily understood, two embodiments thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawi, gs wherein: 0eo9 Figure 1 is a view of a sunshade in accordance with one embodIment 8 of the invwntion, the sunshade being shown mounted on a folding, aluminium-framed chadr, Figure 2 is a detail view illustrating a part of the sunshade of Figure 1, Figure 3 is a view taken along the lines 3-3 ot Figure 1, and -3- LI r r Figure 4 is a view of a second embodiment of the invention.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, the sunshade comprises a first frame member 12 having a pair of arms 13 and 14 and an upper leg 16. The first frame member is formed of a relatively rigid wire or metal rod. A second frame member 17 is of substantially rectangular shape, and is also preferably formed of the same or a similar wire or rod. The second frame member 17 is connected to the first frame member 12 by a pair of struts 18 extending between brackets 19 and 21 fixed to sides 22 and the arms 13 and 14, respectively.
The upper leg 16 of the first frame member 12 extends between upper ends of the arms 13 and 14 which have been reversely bent as at 23. The reverse bending enables a rear end 24 of the second frame member 17 to be engaged with the upper end of the first frame member 12, as shown in Figure I.

I I I A pair of elastic ties 26 extend beiween the sides 22 of the second frame member and the brackets 21 on the arms 13 and 14. The elastic ties 26 are under tension and thus maintain the engagement of t i rear end 24 of the second frame member in the reverse bends 23 of the upper arms 13 and 14.
The sunshade is mounted on a chair 30 by engaging the arms 13 and 14 with the chair back 31. For this purpose, a spacing plate 27 (Figure 3) extends between the arms 13 and 14 and carries a fabric web 28 having pockets 29 which engage about the arms 13 and 14. The spacing plate 27 and the web 28 form a sleeve which engages over the chair back 31 to hold the arms 13 and 14 in the position shown in Figure 3.
15 The lower end of each arm 13 and 14 is provided with a C-shaped clip 33 formed by bending the arm end portion. The clip 33 is of a size to releasably engage the tubular frame members 34 of the chair so as to hold the lower ends of the arms 13 and 14 in the position snown in Figure 1.
In use of the sunshade of this embodiment, the .sleeve formed by the web 28 and spacing plate 27 is engaged with the chair back 31 and the lower ends of \he arms 13 and 14 are clipped to the chair frame members 34.
The rear end of the second frame member 17 is engaged with the reverse bends 23, and the elastic ties 26 are ocated in position so as to hold the sunshade in the **assembled relationship. As previously indicated, a shade cloth, shown in dotted lines in Figure 1, is secured to or mounted on the second frame member 17, such as by the frame member engaging in a pocket formed in the shade cloth material, so as to shade the chair user.
If desired, wings 36 engaged with the sides 22 of the second frame member 17 can be folded out to extend the shade area provided by the shade cloth. The shade cloth may hE formed with pockets in which the wing members 36 are engaged, the material of the shade cloth being in tension and thereby holding the wing members 36 in r the extended position as shown in dotted lines in Figure 1.
The sunshade may be dismantled from the chair by disconnecting the C-shaped clips 33 from the chair frame members 34, removing the sleeve from the chair back 31, and by disengaging the rear end 24 of the second frame member from the reverse bends 23. The second frame member 17 can then be pivoted about the axis of engagement of the struts 18 with the brackets 19 so as to fold the second frame member 17 to a position whereby the folded sunshade occupies a length no longer than the length of the arms 13 and 14.
It will be appreciated that the sunshade frame, particularly the first frame member, may be varied to i*s. suit its application to chairs of a different structure to that shown. Thus, the C-shaped clips 33, the slee,-e formed by the web 28 and the spacing plate 27 and the shape of the arms 13 and 14 may be changed for different chair constructions.
Referring to Figure 4, the sunshade of this embodiment comprises first and second frames 41 and 42 connected by struts 3. The frames 41 and 42 are formed of tubular aluminium, -nd the stru-s are connected thereto Bby rods 44 which may also act as spacers and supports for shade cloth 45 attached to the frames 41 and 42.
The first frame 41 has C-shaped clips 46 extending from its lower end, the clips 46 being of a shape to releasably engage the frame of a chair to which the shade is to be fitted. Further clips 47 are mounted on the sides 48 of the frame 41 to also engage a chair frame and locate the sunshade in position.
At the upper end, the first frame has clips 49 which releasably attach to the rear end of the second frame 42 to hold the frame members in the assembled relationship, as illustrated. When the clips 49 are released, the frame members 41 and 42 can be folded into a flat configuration for transportation and storage.
In a modified form (not illustrated), the fiist -6and second frames are hinged together. In this form, the frames are supported in the operative position by stays which are removable or disconnectable from at least one of the frames to permit folding of the frames or by stays which are telescopic. With the telescopic stays, spring button stops may be provided to lock the stays in assembled position. In an alternative construction, the stays may simply fold.
