Abstract

The present invention provides flax cultivars having low linolenic acid content which produce seeds with similar low linolenic acid content. The flax cultivars are derived from flax seed having genetic mutations chemically induced by treatment with ethyl methane sulphonate at two unlinked loci exhibiting additive gene action. The induced mutations specifically affect the linoleic acid desaturation step in fatty acid biosynthesis.
