Abstract

[Also in Division F1] A mine-roof support structure carries three potentiometers, which are incorporated in three separate D.C. bridges and indicate the relative displacement between preselected parts of the structure. As shown (Fig. 1), in a self-advancing mine roof support consisting of a rear unit 10 and a forward unit 11, joined by articulated members 19, 20, the rear unit 10 comprises a base 12 and a roof bar structure 14 supported by hydraulicallyextensible props 13 powered by a ram 13a in a cylinder 13b. A linear potentiometer 26, consisting of an elongated resistance wire 30 (Fig. 2) fixed by a bracket 33 to the cylinder 13b, and a slider 31 fixed by a bracket 34 to the ram 13a, is connected into a first D.C. bridge circuit which measures extension of the ram. A circular potentiometer 27, consisting of a circular resistance element in a casing 40 (Fig. 3) fixed by a bracket 42 to the base 12, and a slider attached via a spring-loaded cable 38 to the roof bar structure 14, is connected into a second D.C. bridge circuit which measures relative movement between the structure 14 and the base 12. A similar circular potentiometer 28 measures the distance of a forward conveyer C from the base 12.
