Abstract

1,013,419. Grinding. SERVICE (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Feb. 12, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961; Oct. 17, 1961], Nos. 5365/61 and 37107/61. Heading B3D. A machine for towing articles in the manufacture of ceramic ware, such as plates 14, Fig. 1, comprises a rotatable work support 10, a towing device 16 having a work-engaging portion 26 of flexible foam material with abrasive grains embedded therein, and means for bringing the towing device and the article on the support into engagement with one another. The work support 10 consists of a chuck mounted on a rotatable shaft 17 and having resilient cushions 12 for a plate which is held on the support by a vacuum chuck 13 and arms (not shown), such as described in Specification 652,966. The towing device consists of a narrow wooden base member 22, the lower contour of which is complementary to the plate 14 and on which is stuck a continuous strip or a number of pieces 26 of polyurethane foam embedded with abrasive grains of emery, ground talc or aluminium oxide. The towing device is mounted on a rod 18 which is vertically adjustable to bring the device into engagement with the plate as it is rotated. In another embodiment, the base 40, Fig. 5, is equal in length to just over the radius of the plate and clips 42 releasably secure the foam material 46 in the form of a strip or a number of separate pieces embedded with abrasive, to its under surface. The base is connected by a linkage 34 to a beam 30 and springs 48, 50 act on the beam so that the linkage abuts a pin 37. The beam is carried by a vertically-adjustable rod 60 and a spring 33 acts on the rod to urge a roller 74 into engagement with a cam 72 rotatable by a rod 70 driven by an electric motor, the cam being adjustable to vary its eccentricity and hence the movement of the beam. As the towing device 32 is lowered, the spring 48, which is stronger than the spring 50, urges the righthand end of the device into engagement with the centre of the plate first to assist the foam material in following the contour of the plate, the plate being rotated at the same time as the towing device is reciprocated by the cam 72.
