Abstract

In a process for removing higher boiling point impurities from a hydrogen-containing gas mixture by washing the gas mixture with liquid N2 under pressure in a rectification column to produce a substantially pure H2-N2 mixture and residual washing liquid containing higher boiling point impurities, at least a part of the liquid N2 used as washing liquid on the column is produced by compressing gaseous N2, cooling the compressed N2 at least in part by heat exchange with at least a part of the substantially pure H2-N2 mixture and/or at least a part of the residual washing liquid, expanding at least a part of the cooled compressed N2 with the performance of external work to a pressure substantially below the pressure in the rectification column, liquefying the expanded N2, and pumping the liquid N2 so formed to the column pressure before feeding it to the column to serve as washing liquid. Feed gas, containing, say, CO, N2, A and CH4 as impurities, is compressed, passed through heat exchanger 1, where it is cooled partly by a portion of the pure H2-N2 product and partly by vaporized residual washing liquid, and further cooled in exchanger 2 with H2-N2 product. The feed gas is then fed to rectification column 3 where it is washed by a descending liquid N2 stream. The purified gas leaving the top of 3 is divided into two parts, the major passing through exchangers 2 and 1 and the minor part being used to cool unexpanded gaseous N2 in pre-cooler 5, the N2 being previously compressed in compressor 4. The N2 is further cooled in conventional refrigeration system 6, whence one stream passes through expansion engine 10 to 8 where it is completely liquefied by heat exchange with residual washing liquor, from the sump of 3, which has already been partially vaporized in heat exchanger 9 following passage through expansion valve 14. The liquid N2 stream leaves cooler 6 and passes to 7 where it is cooled by heat exchange with the minor part of the H2-N2 product. From 7 the N2 passes to expansion valve 13, where it is partially liquefied during starting up and adjustment of the plant, and subsequently enters separator 12 from which the gaseous portion is conducted to join the H2-N2 product upstream of 7, while the liquid portion is combined with the liquid from the first N2 stream and the combined liquid is subcooled in exchanger 9 prior to entering column 3. The major portion of the pure N2-H2 mixture leaves exchanger 1 and is joined by the minor portion leaving exchanger 5. The main bulk of the N2 fed to compressor 4 may be withdrawn and fed to the H2-N2 product to increase its N2 content to 75%, if direct production of NH3 is subsequently desired.
