Abstract
Microwave components are made by electrodepositing on separate parts of electrically conductive components, e.g. of steel or Ni-Fe alloy, a flash of nickel for corrosion prevention, followed by a flash of silver for increasing conductivity, and brazing the parts together in a protective gas with a silver based solder such as of eutectic Cu-Ag alloy. Prior to electroplating the components may be degreased by etching with HCl or a solution containing FeCl3, KClO3 and HCl (for Ni-Fe alloy). Individual parts, e.g. flanges at the ends of the waveguides, may be assembled into subgroups prior to electroplating by silver soldering. At points where the silver solder is supposed to flow, a layer of copper 1 – 3 microns thick may be electrodeposited. The nickel may be plated from a flat-finish Schering or Watt’s bath; silver plating baths containing more than 100 g/1. KCN may be used.
