Abstract

An indicator display device comprises a column 10 of electroluminescent (e.l.) segments 12A-12F co-operating with the scale of the indicator, a column 20 of photoconductive (p.c.) elements 24A-24F co-operating with the e.l. elements of col. 10, and second control columns 14 and 18 of e.l. and p.c. segments. In operation, the e.l. element 16G is first lit, light (dashed lines) from this rendering the p.c. elements 22F and 24F conductive, and the light signal thus running up the e.l. columns 10 and 14 until a feedback A.C. signal taken from conductors 62A-62F vice resistors 60A-60F and lead 36 is found, in the null detector 34, to balance the input signal 30 to be displayed. The columns 14 and 18 are then extinguished, while latched columns 10 and 20 remain alive. The sequence is then repeated. In an alternative (Fig. 3, not shown), the control signal runs up control columns 14 and 18, and is then transferred to the display columns 10, 20 and there held until a biased null detector clears these columns just before balance is reached on the next cycle in the control columns. In a further alternative, a third set of latched p.c.-e.l. columns are used as the display columns, being activated from the column 10 only at a set time interval.
