Abstract

Glassy sodium polyphosphate of mole ratio cent P2O5, and not less than 75 mole per cent of the terminal groups being OH, the remainder being ONa, is claimed per se and is made by heating in a closed vessel, at 600 DEG C. at least, a basic inorganic sodium compound with volatile anion and a simple acidic phosphate with volatile cation under the appropriate partial pressure of water vapour and rapidly chilling the molten mass. Suitable reagents include and H3PO4. Aqueous solutions of 1-40 p.p.m. of the glass inhibit corrosion of metals in contact with the aqueous system. An amount of 100 p.p.m.-5% of the glass in water may be used to sequester Ca or Mg ions in very hard water. The glass is said to show improved stability to reversion to orthophosphate.
