Abstract

1,040,976. Photographic type-composing. CREED & CO. Ltd. Aug. 6, 1965, No. 33805/65. Heading B6W. A stepping motor 7 pivots a light gun 5, Fig. 1 (not shown), so as to direct a beam 10, 11 via a parabolic reflector 12 on to a light-sensitive receiving surface 4 in an illuminated area A, Fig. 2 (not shown), the size of a character, the area A moving the width of a character at each step. Continuously moving in front of the surface 4 is an opaque band 1 having a plurality of sets of apertures B-F arranged as shown in Fig. 2. While each of the apertures in one set passes across the area A, the light gun is activated at selected instants to produce a character made up of square mosaic elements. In another form the illuminated area D, Fig. 4 (not shown), is a vertically elongated rectangle equal in width to a mosaic unit and stepped by unit widths, the apertures A, B, C being oblique slots. In another form, the illuminated area is a horizontal rectangle the height of a mosaic unit and stepped vertically by unit heights by means of a rotating mirror polygon 16, the apertures 17 being vertical slots. The activation of the light gun, the stepping of the gun and the rotating of the polygon, as applicable in the various forms, are controlled by a mosaic code generator 8 or 28, shown in detail in Fig. 7 (not shown).
