Abstract

1,040,999. Electrophonic musical instruments. W. E. ROBERTS. Aug. 10, 1965 [Aug. 25, 1964], No. 34781/64. Heading G5J. An ultrasonic frequency is sampled at such a frequency that the sampling frequency or a multiple thereof differs from the ultrasonic frequency by the required audio frequency. A crystal controlled oscillator XT, Fig. 1, feeds a sampling unit N which also receives pulses from a crystal-controlled oscillator Xs, the output being fed through an amplifier A to a loud-speaker L. Seven ultrasonic ” tone ” generators T1 … T7, Fig. 2 (not shown), together with two sets of ware-sampling units N1 … N12 and N1<1>… N12<1> enable all the notes of seven octaves to be generated. In an organ, Fig. 3 (not shown), 20 sine wave oscillators H feed ultrasonic frequencies through a coupling unit comprising adding amplifiers with feedback resistor networks Rm and associated switches Sm. When a D.C. voltage is applied to a switch the corresponding frequency passes to an adding unit A1 . . . A7. The outputs from these units are fed over keying switches K11 &c. controlled by the keyboard. The outputs from the keying switches are connected to wave sampling units N1, N1<1> &c. feeding an audio adding circuit M. The key switches are arranged to minimize ” key click,” by the use of a block B, Fig. 5 (not shown), of soft rubber, with a coating of conductive material Z which is pressed against contact wires W1, W2 as the block B is pushed down. Small low-frequency variations in pitch may be introduced, Fig. 1, by the use of a lowfrequency generator 104 which is added to the D.C. bias across a voltage-sensitive backbiased P-N junction 103.
