Abstract

1,041,072. Fifth wheel couplings. NEWAY EQUIPMENT CO. April 11, 1963 [April 16, 1962], No. 14481/63. Heading B7T. King-pin jaws 38 pivoted at 40, Fig. 2, are releasably locked in place by a yoke 42 retractable to the right against a spring 44 by movement of a slide plate 46 having a cam slot 48 engaged with a follower 50 on the yoke. A pair of hollow levers 54 pivotally mounted at 60 by torsion rubber bushings to the underside of the fifth wheel plate 28 provide anchorages for air bag springs 74, see also Fig. 7 (not shown). The bags are inflated by an air line 86, Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown) directly or via the hollow levers through an opening 84, Fig. 7. The levers 54 are also trunnion mounted on blocks 90, and a U-shaped tie 112 depends from each side of the plate 28 and encircles a rubber washer or bumper 110, see also Fig. 4 (not shown) thus limiting relative movements between the plate 28 and the levers 54. The apparatus is not limited to the use of air springs 74 but would employ other types of springing. Figs. 10, 11 (not shown) illustrate a height control valve 120 and its linkage interposed in an air line 86, the valve controlling the amount of air in the springs 74 as the load varies during operation and uncoupling.
