Abstract

1,041,438. Automatic temperature control of furnaces. LEEDS & NORTHRUP CO. Oct. 21, 1964 [Nov. 7, 1963], No. 42863/64. Heading G3R. An automatic control system for controlling the value of a physical variable, such as the temperature of a furnace, comprises two bridge circuits which are unbalanced when a deviation occurs in the physical variable the system being effective to restore the variable by a series of pulses. The temperature of a furnace 10 is detected by a thermocouple 13 which applies a voltage to a measuring circuit 14 and a recording device 19, 20. The thermocouple voltage is further applied to a detector 15 which, inter alia serves to adjust a contact 16a relatively to slidewire 16 so that upon a deviation of the furnace temperature from the desired value, set by means of a control 18c, the bridge circuit 22 becomes unbalanced. With no feedback from the bridge circuit 27 an output then appears from an amplifier 55 to energize a relay 56. Should the deviation in temperature be low the relay 56 is energized to close contacts RL whereupon motor 42 is energized to open a valve 12 in the fuel supply to the furnace 10 to restore the temperature thereof to the desired value. Closure of contacts RL of relay 56 also energizes heaters 34, 35 associated with temperature sensitive resistors 30, 32 forming part of the feedback bridge circuit 27. The thermal inertia of resistor 30 is lower than that of resistor 32, there upon energization of heaters 34, 35 the bridge circuit 27 becomes unbalanced so that the signal from this bridge, taken from an adjustable resistor 48 to provide proportionality, gradually increases until it equals the signal from the bridge 22. Relay 56 then releases, motor 42 and heaters 34, 35 become de-energized. Upon de-energization of the heaters 34, 35 the feedback signal decays whereupon the resultant.signal unbalance to the amplifier 55 again closes contacts RL and the cycle repeats until the furnace is restored to the desired temperature. Should the temperature derivation be high contacts RH of relay 56 close to energize heaters 36, 37 associated with resistors 31, 33 in the bridge circuit 27. Adjustment of the operating conditions of the bridge 27 is made by means of a gauged control on variable resistor 46, 50, 51. In a further embodiment the bridge circuits 22, 27 are incorporated into a single bridge.
