Abstract

1,041,566. Furniture joints. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. May 15, 1963 [May 17, 1962], No. 19111/62. Heading A4H. [Also in Divisions B3 and F2] In a method of providing a threaded end to a tube or pipe of commercially bendable metal, e.g. aluminium or alloys thereof, one end of the tube 1 is located around the tapered shank 2 of a hollow tubular member 3 to abut against an external shoulder 4a formed between the shank and a threaded portion 4, of a greater wall thickness than that of the shank, the tube being secured by deforming it into engagement with a roughened portion 7 of the shank. One or more slits 6 may be formed in the shank. A jig 8 used to facilitate assembly comprises a cylindrical body 9, location spigot 11, resilient washer 13 and a pair of dimpling screws 14. After loosely assembling the shank into the tube in the jig the base of the body 9 is hammered to force the members together and dimpling of the tube to the shank carried out by means of the screws 14. When the screws are in engagement with the tube the assembly may be rotated to produce an annular groove therein. A preferred substantially constant circular cross-section tubular member, Fig. 3 (not shown), comprises a screwed portion 33, shank 31 and a pair of spaced annular serrated or split portions 36, 37. The tube is forced on to the shank to abut a shoulder 35 and the tube wall is deformed into the groove 38 which may be filled with a sealing paint or ring.
