Abstract

The invention comprises 4-fluorotoluene-alpha, alpha-dithiol bis-(0,0-dimethyl phosphorodithioate) having the formula The compound is prepared by reacting 0,0-dimethyl hydrogen phosphorodithioate with 4-fluorobenzaldehyde in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid. Acetic anhydride may also be present, in which case the reaction may be carried out conveniently at 80 DEG C. The compound has insecticidal and miticidal properties (see Division A5).ALSO:An insecticidal or miticidal composition comprises as active ingredient 4-fluorotoluene-alpha, alpha-dithiol bis (0, 0-dimethyl phosphorodithioate) [see Division C2]. The composition may be in the form of a solution, dispersion or emulsion, aerosol, or dust, and specified diluents or carriers are hydrocarbons, e.g. kerosene, and conventional solid carriers. Other insecticides may be present e.g. (a) pyrethrum, (b) rotenone, (c) sabadilla, (d) D.D.T. (Trade Mark), (e) benzene hexachloride, (f) thiodiphenylamine, (g) cyanides, (h) tetraethyl pyrophosphate, (i) diethyl-p-nitrophenyl thiophosphate, (j) dimethyl 2, 2-dichlorovinyl phosphate, (k) 1, 2-dibromo-2, 2-dichloroethyl dimethyl phosphate, (1) azobenzene, (m) compounds of arsenic, lead and/or fluorine. Adjuvants such as spreading or wetting agents may also be present. The active ingredient or composition containing it may be contacted with insects or mites to combat the latter and may be used for improving crop yields by application to a plant area before or after crop planting or crop emergence.
