Abstract
A sintered steel bonded carbide hard metal alloy is made by sintering a mixture of the steel alloy and a metal carbide e.g. TiC which contains a deficiency of combined carbon based on the absolute stoichiometric carbon saturation value of at least 0.5% to not more than 2.5% of said saturation value, and a free carbon content of the carbide not exceeding 0.1%. The steel alloy may be an austenitic nickel chrome steel or a martensitic steel and carbon may be added to the mixture for hardening the steel matrix. The sintering is carried out in vacuum at a maximum 1600 DEG C.
