Abstract

A carbon black having an oil absorption value of not substantially more than 1 c.c. of oil per g. of carbon black, a B.E.T. surface area of less than 100 m.2/g. and a pH value of not substantially more than 5, is made by contacting a furnace carbon black, which is alkaline and has an oil absorption value of not substantially more than 1 c.c. of oil per g. of carbon black, with ozone at a temperature not greater than 250 DEG C. Said furnace carbon black is made in a known manner, e.g. by incorporating an alkali metal in elemental or compound form in the hydrocarbon feed to the furnace. In a typical embodiment, as shown, hydrocarbon feedstock, which may contain 50 p.p.m. KCl, fuel and air react in furnace 10 ro form a smoke which is quenched with water in chamber 15 to a temperature below 250 DEG C. and contacted with an ozone containing stream. The mixture is passed through separators 21 and 27, carbon black being collected at the bottom and off-gases leaving from the top of the separators. Alternatively, the furnace carbon black may be treated with ozone in a separate chamber after being separated from the combustion gases and steam from the quench. A mixture of ozone and air may be used in another method, which employs a loop reactor (Fig. 5, not shown). The furnace carbon black may be pulverized prior to contact with an ozone-air mixture.
