Abstract

In the formation of mineral fibres, a cupola 2 discharges a molten stream 4 which is intercepted by a rotating distributer roll 6 so that the particles of the stream are accelerated and discharge on to rollers 8 and 10 counter-rotating at high speed whereby the molten material is centrifugally dispersed as discrete fibres. In the manufacture of mats or batts of heat insulation material comprising a mixture of mineral i.e. rock and/or slag, and glass or similar vitreous “wool” fibres, glass primary filaments 60 are attenuated by flame, gas or vapour into fibres 70 which are discharged transversely at several points into, and are entrained by, an air stream conveying the mineral fibres into a collection chamber 18 wherein all the fibres are thus intermingled. The glass fibres impart resiliency to the fibre mass.ALSO:In the manufacture of mats or batts of heat insulation material comprising a mixture of mineral i.e. rock and/or slag, and glass or similar vitreous “wool” fibres, glass primary filaments 60 are attenuated by flame, gas or vapour into fibres 70 which are discharged transversely at several points into, and are entrained by, an air stream conveying mineral fibres formed by rotors into a collection chamber 18 wherein all the fibres are thus intermingled. The glass fibres impart resiliency to the fibre mass and to mats &c., formed by suction-assisted deposition of fibres on to an endless, foraminous conveyer, so that their bulk and thermal properties are recoverable after compression for transportation purposes. In the formation of the mineral fibres, a cupola 2 discharges a molten stream 4 which is intercepted by a rotating distributer roll 6 so that the particles of the stream are accelerated and discharge on to, (and thence partly on to) rollers 8 and 10 counter rotating at high speed whereby the molten material is centrifugally dispersed as discrete fibres. A heat curable binder is incorporated in the fibres and, after this has been cured, the mat &c., is covered on at least one surface by a vapour resistant paper.
