Abstract
Aqueous polyvinyl alcohol gels are prepared by mixing an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol and a vanadium compound which is soluble in the polyvinyl alcohol solution and wherein the valence state of the vanadium is + 5, at a pH not greater than about 2. The polyvinyl alcohol may be a partially or completely hydrolysed polyvinyl ester, e.g. polyvinyl acetate. The vanadium compound may be ammonium, sodium or potassium vanadate, and the pH may be adjusted by adding a strong acid, e.g. hydrochloric or sulphuric acid. The compositions may be foamed before gelling to provide insulating and packaging materials, and used for coating paper and paperboard. Examples describe the gelling of aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol with ammonium vanadate in the presence of (1) and (2) hydrochloric acid and (3) hydrochloric or sulphuric acid.
