Abstract
1,044,268. Spray drying skimmed milk and whey. INDUSTRIE-WERKE KARLSRUHE A.G. April 21, 1964 [July 25, 1963], No. 16460/64. Heading A2D. [Also in Divisions B1 and B2] In the production of easily-wettable powdered substances, e.g. dried skimmed milk or whey, the material to be dried is first concentrated to a solids content of 40 to 52% by weight and then introduced into a stream of hot air moving at a speed of 10 to 150 metres per second whereby the material is dried to a powder but the exhaust air temperature does not exceed 90‹C., and returning the fine grain portion of the powder to the drying zone. The powder obtained as product has a specific weight of at least 680 grams per litre, and the average air-inclusion in the particles is less than 10% by volume. The concentrated liquid is preferably introduced into the drying zone through a nozzle 18 (Fig. 2) which is surrounded by cold-air nozzle 16 which is itself surrounded by the nozzle 6 which supplies the hot drying air. Nozzle 18 may be replaced by a plurality of tubes for the liquid. In an example, skimmed milk concentrate having a solids content of 48.5% is forced, at a temperature of 60‹C., to nozzle 18; filtered air at about 300‹C., is supplied to the outer nozzle 6; and compressed air at 20‹ to 70‹C. is conducted to the intermediate nozzle. A turbulent jet of air containing fine drops of skimmed milk enters the top of a drying column, where the temperature is 84‹C. The dried powder collects in the conical base of the column and is deposited on a shaker-trough from where it is conveyed to a packing station. The exhaust air withdrawn from the top of the column carries the fine grain powder which is removed from the air in separators; the fine powder is pneumatically returned to the central section of the drying column. Fig. 5 shows a nozzle 42 attached by a screw thread to a liquid supply tube 38. The gap 37 between the mouthpiece 43 of the nozzle and a stationery end plate 32 can be adjusted while the nozzle is in operation, by rotating the nozzle by means of rod 47.
