Abstract

A polyalkoxysiloxane mixture is made by reacting together a silicon tetrahalide, a primary or secondary alcohol of 1-16 C atoms, water and, as a co-reactant and reaction moderator, a tetraalkyl orthosilicate, the alkyl radicals of which correspond to the alkyl radical of the alkanol, the alkanol being present in a ratio of from 2.0 to 3.0 mols per mol. of the tetrahalide, the water being present in an amount from 10 to 25 mol. per cent, based on the total quantity of alkanol and water, and the orthosilicate being present in amount such that the volume ratio of the initial orthosilicate to the balance of the final reaction mixture is in the range of from 10:1 to 1:20. Among the reactants specified, the preferred ones are SiCl4 and 2-ethylbutanol. When using higher water-insoluble alcohols, addition of a mutual solvent, e.g. dioxane, is desirable. The reaction is preferably effected at 70 DEG to 105 DEG F. and the crude product is purged of HCl by blowing with an inert gas or by neutralization with a base. Examples are given in which the products are mixtures of di- and poly-silicates. Uses: as hydraulic fluids and lubricants.
