Abstract
1,045,689. Turbines axial flow compressors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Aug. 2, 1963 [Aug. 3, 1962], No. 30779/63. Headings F1C and F1T. A toroidal steam turbine exhaust scroll 9 has one peripheral edge 10 attached to a casing 5 surrounding the turbine 3 and the other edge 12 carrying a seal 13 co-operating with the rotor shaft 1. The casing 5 carries an annular plate 20 to divide the scroll 9 into two chambers 17, 22. Steam leaving the turbine 3 axially flows outwards in the direction of arrow 16 and part is deflected by plate 20 to flow circumferentially towards an outlet 18. The remaining steam enters chamber 22 through gap 21 and is also deflected to flow circumferentially but with a whirl component 23. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the plate (26) is semi-annular over an arc adjacent the outlet 18. The construction is applicable also to compressors and reduces the back pressure on the machine.
