Abstract

1,045,914. Feeding webs. CROSS PAPERWARE Ltd. June 26, 1964 [July 10, 1963], No. 27352/63. Heading B6B. [Also in Division B8] A support for a web supply reel comprises a fixed post 11, Figs. 1 and 3, on which is freely rotatable a sleeve 12 axially adjustable on the post 11 by a knob 14. Mounted on the sleeve 12 is a collar 17 provided with pawls 34 cooperating with ratchet teeth 35 formed as circumferential grooves in the sleeve 12. Keyed to the sleeve is a part 27 of a collar 16 formed in two parts 27, 28 engaging each other along oblique surfaces 33, the part 27 supporting a lever 31 to engage in one of a plurality of slots 30 in the sleeve. The part 27 is also formed with a brake disc 29 clamped between brake pads 20 carried on arms 18, 19 pivoted on a bar 21, the pads 20 being urged together by an air clamp 25. In operation, the collar 16 is adjusted to the desired axial position on the sleeve 12 by engaging the lever 31 in a selected slot 30, the sleeve is adjusted axially by means of the knob 14, such axial movements causing the bar 21 to move axially on rollers 26, the collar 17 is removed by releasing the pawls 34, a web reel is inserted over the sleeve, and the collar 17 is replaced with the pawls engaging a selected ratchet tooth so that the collars are spaced apart the axial length of the reel core C. Adjustment of the nut 14 during operation provides for alignment of the reel. When the web is drawn from the reel, the resistance of the pads 20 produces a desired working tension in the web, the part 28 thus rotating relative to the part 27, whereby the part 28 moves to the right to hold the core firmly in position on the two collars.
