Abstract

Mineral oils and gasolines contain phosphonate copolymers containing recurring units of the formula where R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl groups, R3 represents C1-C8 alkyl or C1-C8 chloroalkyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, benzyl or chlorobenzyl, R4 represents hydrogen or a C4-C24 tert.-alkyl group, R5 represents H or -CH3, and n is zero or 1, with the proviso that R5 represents H when n is zero. The comonomers are selected to ensure oil-solubility of the copolymer.ALSO:A phosphonate copolymer contains units of the formula wherein R1 and R2 each represent hydrogen or C1-C8 alkyl groups, R3 represents C1-C8 alkyl or C1-C8 chloroalkyl, phenyl, chlorophenyl, benzyl, or chlorobenzyl, R4 represents hydrogen or a C4-C24 tert-alkyl group, R5 represents H o -CH3, and n is zero or 1 with the proviso that R5 represents H when n is zero. The other monomers preferably confer oil-solubility on the polymer; long lists are given. The copolymer may be made by copolymerizing the vinyl, acryloxy or methacryloxy counterpart of the above units with the other monomers. The polymer is preferably made by copolymerizing a monomer of formula R4HNCH2CH2OR6 wherein R6 is a vinyl, acryloyl or methacryloyl group with the other monomers preferably in solution in a solvent such as toluene, then reacting the polymer with a compound having the formula and a compound having the formula The exemplified aldehyde is formaldehyde. Phosphites exemplified are dimethyl, diphenyl, di-(2-chlorethyl), diethyl, and di-2-ethylhexyl phosphites.
