Abstract
104,737. Flint, F. P., and Flint, A. V. March 16, 1916. Fixed-abutment type; packing drums and vanes; working-fluid supply.-Relates to rotary engines, pumps, and meters of the kind wherein the rotor carries curved outwardly-sliding vanes having both ends always in contact with the casing. The contour of the casing A has a, curvature at, and over an extent of about thirty degrees on either side of, each end of the major axis of the casing, coinciding with that of a circular arc struck about a centre on the major axis with a radius equal to that of the rotor, the remainder of the casing contour being shaped to give contact with a blade of such circular curvature that it passes through three points, namely a point situated on the major axis midway between the rotor circle and the casing contour, a second point equidistant with the first from the centre of the rotor but situated on the minor axis, and a third point at which it touches a circle described about the centre of the casing with a radius of half the minor radius of the casing. Two chambers A<1>, A<2> connected by a duct A<3> are formed on oppcsite sides of the rotor B, the maximum volume confined during a revolution between two ends of the same vane D being equal to the maximum volume confined between adjacent ends of the two vanes D. As each vane-end passes the spring-pressed packing-piece E, a charge, which may be under pressure, is drawn into the chamber A’ through a port F and then compressed and transferred through the duct A<3> to the other side of the rotor, where it is ignited by a sparking-plug at H, exhaust taking place through a port G. For reversing, the packing E is modified, a duplicate sparking-plug is fitted in the chamber A<1>, and the functions of the ports F, G interchanged. The packing E may be made narrower than the full axial width of the chamber, flanges on the rotor filling the gaps. The rotor is made up of three parts B<1>, B<2>, B<2> connected by shouldered studs with screwed ends, the vanes D having slots D<1> to clear the studs. The vanes carry shoes D<2> and packing-pieces D<4>, D<3>, B<5> are fitted as shown. Instead of two vanes, one vane or more than two vanes may be used. The Provisional Specification describes the rotor as formed in two halves bolted together, the plane of division being at right-angles to the shaft, and each half has curved slots, each slot constituting half a guideslot for the vane.
