Abstract

The invention comprises halogenation products of 1,2-monoepoxycyclododeca-5,9-diene and halogenation products of adducts of 1,2-monoepoxycyclododeca – 5,9 – diene with a phosphorus halide and/or with a compound containing a hydroxylic group. Specified phosphorus halides are those of the formulae PX3, PX5 and POX3 where X is a halogen. The compound containing a hydroxylic group may contain a simple hydroxyl group, as in water or an alcohol or phenol, or a hydroxyl group forming part of a carboxyl, sulphonic or organic phosphonic radical. The compounds of the invention are prepared by treating the epoxycyclododecadiene or its adduct with a halogenating agent. The adducts are generally prepared by heating the components together.ALSO:A flame-retardant synthetic resin material comprises a synthetic resin and, as a flame-retarding agent, a halogenation product of 1,2 – monoepoxy – cyclododeca – 5,9 – diene or a halogenation product of an adduct of 1,2-monoepoxycyclododeca-5,9-diene with a phosphorus halide and/or with a compound containing a hydroxylic group. The resin materials specified are polymers or copolymers of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, for example, hydrocarbons, acrylates, vinyl esters and acrylonitrile. The resin materials may be foamable or foamed, polystyrene resins being preferred. In Example 3, polystyrene is dissolved in benzene, a flame-retarding additive is added, and a film is then cast from the solution; the composition is stated to be suitable for the production of a self-extinguishing foamed resin.ALSO:Resin particles may be coated with a flame-retarding agent which is a halogenation product of 1, 2-monoepoxycyclododeca-5, 9-diene or a halogenation product of an adduct of 1, 2-monoepoxycyclododeca-5, 9-diene with a phosphorus halide and/or with a compound containing a hydroxylic group. Foamable polystyrene heads are especially suitable for treatment. In a first process, the particles of resin are coated by “tumbling” them in a drum with an appropriate quantity of flame-retarding agent and if desired an adhesive such as an oil or wax. In a second process, the resin particles are treated with an aqueous dispersion of the flame-retarding agent so that a surface coating is applied, for instance by coagulating the dispersion.
