Abstract

In a method of forming and delivering glass, a charge of the molten material is severed from a downwardly directed stream and immediately gripped and pressed by laterally moving male and female formers, the charge then being retained in the female former which is moved laterally and rotated to bring the charge into an overlying relationship with a continuously moving head on to which it is deposited, the female former finally being returned to the forming station. In operation a male former 32 and female former 33 are located just below a pair of shears 31. As a gob G is sheared, the formers are moved towards each other by the respective actions of their pistons and cylinders 41, 42 and 52, 53, thus catching the gob and pressing it. As they move together vacuum is applied to the female former cavity 111 through orifices 111a and 111b ; to ensure a firm pressure the piston rod 40 of the male former 42 acts against a spring 46. The formers are then drawn apart by reversing the action of their cylinders, the charge P being held in the female former by suction. When the female former 33 has been retracted it is rotated downwardly through 90 degrees by means of hydraulically operated pushing rods 82, 83, Fig. 9 (not shown), acting against a yoke 80 attached to a rotatable supporting rod 70 to which the female former is attached, said rod 71 being mounted within a movable arm 71. The female former is now located over an inverted spindle S of a continuously rotating machine, e.g. a Westlake machine. In order that the charge may be deposited upon the moving spindle, the arm 71 is rotated about a vertical axis for about 2 1/4 degrees of machine movement at the same speed as the machine, and also the piston and cylinder 52, 53 of the female former is operated to move the charge closer to the spindle. The vacuum is then turned off and air pressure is briefly applied to release the charge. The female former 33 is then retracted upwardly, rotated upwardly through 90 degrees and swung back horizontally to the initial position. The charge P having been deposited upon the sdindle S is clamped peripherally by arcuate clamping elements 121, Figs. 16-20 (not shown), and a plunger 123 with a concave surface is moved upwardly to bring its periphery 124 into contact with the periphery of the underside of the charge for cooling purposes. The formers are cooled by passing a liquid through tubes 110a therein. The operation of the delivery and forming mechanisms is controlled by a series of timer drums actuating the hydraulic circuit described with reference to Fig. 15 (not shown).
