Abstract
A method of making coated paper comprises applying to one surface of an uncoated dry paper web, by a first trailing blade coater means, a prime coating composition comprising an aqueous suspension of mineral pigment and adhesive while moving the web forwardly in contact with a resilient-surfaced backing roll, applying a top coating composition comprising an aqueous suspension of mineral pigment and adhesive to the prime coated paper web by a second trailing blade coater means at a position further on from the area of the prime coating application and before the prime coated paper web has been heat-dried and while the web remains in contact with the roll, thus merging the successively applied layers of coating composition, stripping the web from the roll and heat-drying it. The term trailing blade coater means includes coating devices where a dip roll is used to apply to a paper web a coating composition which is then doctored by means of a flexible blade spaced from the dip roll, puddle coating devices where paper on a backing roll is passed through a trough containing coating composition, the outlet edge of which is defined by a flexible blade and coating devices where the coating composition is applied under pressure through a jaw-like trough extending transversely of the web, the trailing lip comprising a blade which serves as a metering edge and which may be followed by a doctor blade. The components of the top and prime coating compositions may be the same, or different, provided that the two are compatible with each other. The mineral pigment of the coating compositions may be clay, TiO2, or CaCO3, and the adhesive component may be corn starch, casein, or various aqueous synthetic polymeric dispersions or latices, e.g. polyvinyl acetate latex, polyacrylic resin latex, or butadiene-styrene copolymer latex.
