Abstract

1,052,289. Foamed thermoplastic polymers containing fibrous filler. HAVEG INDUSTRIES Inc. Dec. 11, 1964, No. 50556/64. Headings C3C. C3F, C3G, C3N, C3P, C3Q and C3R. Fibre-filled porous articles comprise a foamed core integrally united to two non-porous skins, the whole being derived from a thermoplastic polymer composition containing a filler whose fibres are less than 1 inch in length and have a length/diameter ratio of at least 20/1 and preferably 100/1, the skins comprising 50-96% of the thickness of the article. The fibres may be 5-75% of the weight of the composition and the final foam a density of 7À5-75% of the unfoamed polymer. Specified thermoplastics include polystyrenes, polyalkenes, vinyl chloride polymers, polyurethanes, chlorinated rubber, cellulose ethers and esters, bituminous materials, paraffin wax, polymers of vinyl ethers and esters, of unsaturated fluorocarbons, of unsaturated mono- and poly-carboxylic acids and derivatives, polycarbonates, oxymethylene polymers and copolymers, polyesters and polyamides. Specified fibrous materials include asbestos, glass cellulose and derivatives thereof, polyamides, polyesters, polycarbonates, vinyl chloride polymers, polyacrylonitrile and the material known under the Registered Trade Mark ” Saran “. The fibrous material should not melt under the conditions of preparation of the articles of the invention. Specified articles are ceiling or wall tiles, boat hulls, roofs, cups, buckets, drum liners and pipes. The articles may be prepared by extrusion of the hot foamable composition while chilling the surfaces of the extruded composition which foams between the resulting non-porous skins. Various pretreatments of the fibres, such as thorough drying or treatment with surfactants are specified to ensure wetting of the fibres by the polymer. The process may for example be continuous, the composition being extruded as a tube. Specified blowing agents are volatile liquids which may be incorporated into the dry pelletized thermoplastic as adsorbates on for example diatomaceous earth, fuller’s earth, silica gel, activated alumina, molecular sieves, attapulgite and active carbon. Nucleating agents, being mixtures of carbonates and bicarbonates with acid reacting salts should preferably be included.
