Abstract
1,053,856. Disc brakes; hydraulic brakes. GIRLING Ltd. Sept. 2, 1963 [Sept. 14, 1962], No. 35081/62. Headings F2E and F2F. A disc brake for road-rail vehicles comprises a pair of complementary levers 11, 12 straddling the outer periphery of each of a pair of wheels or pair of discs rotating on a wheel-axle and pivotally connected by a yoke 13 near the middle of their lengths, brake shoes (Fig. 2, not shown) mounted on the end of each lever and an actuator 19 for the levers, the levers and the actuator being mounted between side plates 15 held apart by a pair of end-plates 17, 18 which are cranked to provide flanges for attachment to an arm which carries the axle-box of the vehicle (not shown). The lever 12 is pivoted on the side plates at 14. The actuator 19 is connected between the outer ends of the levers 11, 12 and its piston-rod 20 has a slot 21 in which works the pin 22 connecting it to the lever 11. The ends of the pin 22 project into guide slots in the side plates 15. A transparent cover 24 on the actuator excludes dirt and makes leakages visible. The outer end of the lever 11 is also connected to a cable-andconduit actuator 25 for applying the brakes manually by a remote hand-lever. If both brakes are on together the hand-brake is not pulled off by release of the service-brake due to lost motion provided by the slot 21. For service brake operation hydraulic fluid is supplied under pressure from a master cylinder 27 actuated by a vacuum-suspended booster 28. The cylinder 27 may be connected through a manually or automatically operated selector valve 29 to the two actuators 19 of a pair of brakes, the actuators being of different diameters to give three degrees of braking corresponding to different loadings of the vehicle. 30 is an automatic slack adjuster of the hydraulic type.
