Abstract

The invention comprises a water-insoluble, alcohol-soluble, waxy solid comprising at least one methylol or alkoxymethyl derivative of a fluoroalkanamide, the fluoroalkane moiety of the fluoroalkanamide having 3-21 carbon atoms, having a ratio of atoms C : F no greater than n : 0.7 (2n + 1) where n is the number of carbon atoms therein, and being terminated by a CHF2 or CF3 group. The solids preferably correspond to the formula where Q represents a fluoroalkyl radical having 3 to 21 carbon atoms, 2 to 15 fluorine atoms and a terminal CHF2 or CF3 group, R is hydrogen, C1- 6 alkyl or C5- 6 cycloalkyl and X is H,C1- 6 alkyl or -CH2OR. The methylol compounds are prepared by reacting the appropriate fluoroalkanamide with formaldehyde, whilst the alkoxymethyl derivatives are obtained when the appropriate alcohol is also present. The fluoroalkanamide starting materials may be prepared from ammonia and the corresponding fluoroalkanoic acid esters.ALSO:Oil repellent and oily particulate soil repellent textiles comprising a textile base having chemically affixed thereto the residue or residues of at least one methylol derivative of a fluoroalkanamide are obtained by contacting the textile in the presence of an acidic catalyst and at a temperature in the range 80 – 300 DEG F. with a water-insoluble, alcohol-soluble, woay solid comprising at least one methylol or alkoxymethyl derivative of a fluoroalkanamide, the fluoroalkane moiety of the fluoroalkanamide having 3-21 carbon atoms, having a ratio of atoms C:F no greater than n: 0.7 (2n + 1) where n is the number of carbon atoms, therein, and being terminated by a CHF2 or CF3 group.
